since we're on the topic of keys, i have the scion security system and when i push the panic button, nothing happens?

its been a week since i had my car and i have not asked them about, i never really use the panic button but i thought it was suppose to trick the person stealing the car and not me as i push the botton and nothing happens

Hold the panic button for a second. It works. I think this is to keep you from accidentally setting it off in your pocket.

150 isnt that bad,

its 95 for a GM key with the passkey chip in it..

i bought my alero which had factory keeyless entry... but no fobs.

the fob is another 70, and another 30 to program it.

thats close to 200 for a key, fob, and programming.

so i bought a fob off ebay for 5 bucks, paid 3 for shipping, and had a friend at the dlrshp program it.

damn gm

Someone posted a picture of the key from ebay, so if you lose yours, you might be able to buy one uncut online and get it done at the dealership, but I didn't know what the auction was running so I don't know how much money you'd save. I agree though - having a built in fob is great - but better than that is my dad's Prius - it's got a fob with no real key. When you've got it in your pocket and you touch the door handle it unlocks. Then you just press the power button to start - you never have to take it out of your pocket. I drove it for 2 days and I totally miss that part.

It's not an abbreviation or anything. A fob is just a little thingie, like a key chain - a key fob. It is often used to describe the little pod-shaped keychains that alarms use, hence the talk of moving the fob onto the key. What they really mean is the controls were moved onto the key, and some of the bulk moved with it out of necessity.

Hey Litobirdy,
When you get the tC, you get two keys with fobs and you get another valet key, which doesn't have the buttons on it (if I remember correctly) and can't unlock the glove compartment). Also, AFAIK, there are no alarms other than the Scion Security one from the dealer that can use the keyfob buttons, so no, if you install a remote start/ alarm (obviously not from the dealer), you will have an additional fob that you'll need to use. I'm sure it can be wired so that it can unlock your doors, so you won't have to use the buttons on the key at all, but carrying around another fob (with an already large key) is one of the #1 reasons I got the scion security system instead of aftermarket.

i think that person meant the fob is attatched to the key, as in they're one piece and there's no extra piece on your keyring....

Well, it's not really a regular one. It's a valet key, and it will open the doors, and start the car, but it will not unlock the glovebox. That way you can secure things in your glovebox, away from those theiving little valets!
