Magazines' Disinterest in Scion
k, so what you want it a comparison of a Tc that is TRD'd out, with a Cobalt SS that has GM performance parts installed, and a Honda civic si that has honda performance parts installed? or you what you want is a comparison between a modded Tc and two other stock cars?... if a Tc has to be modded to be compared to another car, it obviously isnt in the same class. what you are saying is the Tc is little more than a honda civic ex...
American car magazines such as Car & Driver get most of their funding from, you guessed it, CAR COMPANIES. So that tells you Scion didnt waste too much $ on the old fogies workin at Car & Driver.
Just to add, that magazine has the same old people working there from the begining of time... I wouldnt take their opinions to heart

You're one of the people that doesn't seem to fully get the dynamic. I think one of the ideas behind the Scion idea was to allow a single car model to transcend multiple classes. A buyer can easily transform their car in a fashion that no other brand offers to take it from one class to another. All of this before purchasing, the final price being very predictable, and all of the parts covered by the dealership under warranty.
out of 100 tC i see maybe 5 of them arent stock...and of those 5 maybe 1 or 2 has anything more then a set of wheels...do you REALLY think it would benefit scion to cater to the 2-5% of owners that take it a step farther? no
i bet i could get a modded chevy aveo to out run the tC...does that mean it should be in this comapro? no...just face facts, the tC is NOT a performance car...for gods sakes it has a glass roof!

also Chevy has different power packages for the Cobalt SS but these rnt used. neither are the power packages for the SRT neons when they were around...you dont test modded cars you test stock cars. when Joe Magazine Reader picks up motor trend he doesn’t want to see "this is a great car after you spend another $7,000 on it".
if scion wants that kind of car then they need a TRD edition tC with all the goodies, which we all know will never happen as long as Toyota is building the car because some time around 1998 they forgot how to have fun. just enjoy your car for what it is, a smaller, better looking, two door Camry with a sweet sunroof.

Funny how xB owners are the one's that are so quick to turn around and take a dump on the performance of the tC!
Is it a world beater? Not by any means, but don't tell me be happy with your "camry". That is just insulting. I know they share a powerplant and other trim pieces but for god's sake, be gentle!!
Oh yeah by the way, I'll take my tC over any GM product any day of the week!!!!

there is no such thing as fast cars only fast drivers. i really dont care how fast my car is. there are ALOT more dementions of a car then speed.
its the same engine and trans from the camry. you know what they say to do about shoes that fit...

So what some of you are saying is that you would prefer to be limited to trim levels i.e. Cobalt LS, SS; Civic EX, Si, etc. as opposed to have a free range of combinations to choose from to reach the class of your choice? You don't need a TRD edition!! You can add the bits you want and skip the ones you don't. Make your own!
Until a reputable mag does a relatively objective test on a tC that is molded towards performance, don't say its not a performance oriented car. Neither is the Cobalt or the Civic.
If you're going to have a tC worth 23k in a performance test it better be equipped with every performance option possible otherwise you are not getting an accurate test. You are left with misinformation and a waste of time.

for $23k you can get a GTI, MS3, Mini S and your almost into WRX territory. At that the fit/finish of the car comes into play. racing seats, leather wheel, 6spd, ect. it gets to the point where ppl arent going to spend that much money on a tC because there are better options out there for the price. thats why all the parts are OPTIONS.
the tC is a great car as long as your dont break the $19k mark after that there are plenty of better cars out there. (the new sentra Spec-v is a hell of car for the price) and once you get north of $22k your nuts if you buy the tC with all the offerings out there.
You (and all tC owners) have a biased opinion because you own the car, you love it, and you need to justify to yourselves and others your purchase.

The Celica has shared many engine designations with the Camry and Corolla as well as the MR2 are you gonna say the same thing about them?
Howa bout when the 08 xB comes out and actually does share an identical 2AZ and tranny with the Camry, will that make yours the slow punny version of the new xB thats nothing more than a Camry or the fast boxy version of the old unsuccessful Echo?
man oh man i love how defensive all you guys get if someone doesnt think the tC is gods gift to the open road...its a 16k economy coupe with some style...get over yourselves.
There is a thread in the xB forums somewhere that I started called “you know you drive an xB when…” and one of the comments was “tC owners try to race you every chance they get because they know it’s a sure win” and that’s the attitude you guys all give off. and that’s why a lot of ppl in the xB/xA forums don’t like tC drivers. We know you can go faster, we don’t care.

Please don't vouch for the tC unless you own one. It comes with no credibility. As for making excuses, the point of this thread was to point out that a tC has never been tested in proper form so I do not understand where that came from. I could just as easily say you are here denying the potential of a tC because you own an xB.

No one EVER said it was "god's gift" to the open road. That goes hand in hand with you stereotyping "all" tC owners. Whats next?

Why did you leave out 1/4 times?
the tC is nice car. it does everything pretty good without standing out in any particular thing. just as this test shows its middle of the pack. It’s the Toyota way. Do good in everything and have a well rounded car. when you boil it down to its basics its an economy car. even if you bolt on all the parts they sell… its an economy car with a lot of bolt-ons. It will never be anything more. im sure if you go to any of the of the forums for the other cars on the list they also think there car should have placed higher. its called brand/model loyalty and i understand that. So just keep on doing what ever your doing that makes you happy but once you realize that there are actually other cars out there that can do things better than the tC you will find the car culture in general a whole lot more fun. im done.
The whole point of the thread was to expose the fact that the Scion dynamic(including xA's, xB's, xd's in the future) is wholly unappreciated and maybe misunderstood. The tC's potential via offered options has not been properly tested by the mainstream car media but they take the liberty to point out that it lacks here and there. That is what I am getting at.
