Bleh. I despise cars that do this. I have a lock button on my arm rest, so I'll lock my doors when I want them locked, not when the manufacturer *thinks* they should be locked.
My wife's stupid Corolla locks me in all the time, because the auto-lock is tied to the ignition, instead of something logical like the speedometer.

/puts on tinfoil hat
Honestly, I wish this feature came standard in my tC.
My sister's highlander does it.
When she starts the car and puts it in drive, the doors lock. When she puts the tranny on park and turns off the engine, the doors unlock.
It's a Toyota alarm too. I guess it depends on who manufactures the alarm. Hers was a Chapman alarm I think.

try it... get inside car, lock doors, use handle, open door.
Word, its not like they have the old BMW deadbolt system which has since been discontinued due to drownings or people locked in their car when electric fails.
How to? Relay hit by accessory (at column) to trigger Peripheral Electronics adjustable timer to pulse door lock. 2nd timer to N.C. relay pin to hit unlock on loss of accessory.

I think there is a way to change that on the Corolla-- if you look in the owners manual under the Section Keys and Doors in the "Side Doors" part, there is a section called Automatic Door Locking and unlocking functions-- there's 4 modes and mode 2 cancels the automatic door locking function....unless of course your wife wants it to automatically lock--
you could make up a song you sing when you get in your car
