lol, my bad. I didn't mean to put down the GM filter. I'm sure its a great filter, but its unorthodox as you implied and I wanna play it safe! I'm destraught over the fact that it's poor quality media though!

That'd be great SSQ if you can find it!

These arn't for our application, but it'll give you a rough idea of what's good and what's not in terms of quality. And I was wrong, it's not THAT old!

and again, the media quality of Toyota isn't bad. It's at least a synthetic fiber material and not the paper media like others.

I've been using mobil1 filters on my two tcs for a couple years now, and no problems or complaints at all. I know I don't have any technical things to say about it, but i used to use mobil1 oil in my automatic tc. since ive had this manual ive used amsoil, and stuck with the same filters. never any issues :] just thought i'd throw that in there.

Just out of curiousity, does anyone have any comments on a K&N filter versus the M1? I've heard their both good quality filters, but the toyo ones are better than them.

K&N Filters are built by Champion Labs as well, but there's just something different about it. They feel like tanks! Never used it, but I just assume that it's a M1 in a bulletproof case.

I actually looked at the Toyota filter element and a Champion Labs filter under a SEM, which really got my mind set on the toyota.

Use of synth, and the OEM filter is all you need.
Amsoil and Royal Purple are good too.

Yea, I've heard great things about amsoil synthetic oil. According to the guy at my local private car parts place, its better quality oil than mobil1. True or not, I don't know, but it's definitely up there with the rest of them. It is guaranteed to 25K between oil changes though! Thats crazy. No filter can last that long, so it would have to be swapped out and the oil shouldn't be left in there for that long. Because i'm doing my oil changes at 5-7.5K, I am fine with the mobil1 extended performance, but if I wanted to go longer, I would consider the amsoil.

i used what the dealer used on the first 2 free oil changes. On the 3rd i changed to Mobil1 Fully Synthetic and Mobile1 Filter. However ive only gone about 1.5k miles on it with 3 months already? IDK if its a waste of me using that oil since i dont even go the full 3-4k i was thinking about? Ill change it sometime later in the month. No problems tho to report tho?

thanks! 2005 tC with 15kmiles. Only 15miles to and from work! So much for spending about $40 for M1 oil and never getting full use of it?

Do me a favor spect2k3. I assumed that you bought a new mobil EP filter. Look into the center hole in the filter. The center tube, is it a round metal tube with holes, or is it plastic ribs?

its a cell phone picture, but its the best I can do. You can sorta make out the metal holes on the inside.

What does this mean to you?

The metal center tube is the traditional choice, used by almost everybody. Champion Labs has switched the design of some centertubes to what is called the e-core, which is based on plastic ribs.

I am just curious to see if the change have been made to the mobil1 line.

Amsoil is expensive, but it totally lasts a long time. I've had it in my car for some 17k miles so far, runs beautifully. mileage is great. i just change the filters once in a while.

^^ I would probably say that that's long enough! Regardless of the composition, dirt still gets in.

So SSQ, you are saying that the metal center tube is a good thing? Do the toyota filters have that?

Whats the deal with TRD filters? For $12 a filter, how are they compared to the toyota filter?

Its not good or bad, it's just a matter of "coolness". For filters that's got less restrictions on the filter elements, the ecore will be very useful. Toyota uses a aluminum alloy for the center tube and it's freakin tough.

There have been some toyota fiters which employs a arrangement of filters in which the pleats are folded sideways, and was proven to have better flow characteristics and less pressure on the center tube. This was typically seen in the denso made toyota filters that are made in Japan. I am guessing the TRD filters would have the same design.

As I said, if you can buy a few of them, I don't mind getting one off your hand and chopping it open and posting up the pictures. Personally, I think it's the only way to learn anything.

Besides if I remember correctly, M1 filter are 10 dollars itself. Pay another 2 dollars and you got something that's at least..... longer.
