Use BOTH! FYI, brake cables do rust and snap in snowy cold areas. Road salt is usually the culprit. The cold weather makes the cable more brittle. The car doesn't necessarily have to be old...just cheap. And that's why you're supposed to use both! But the line is much less likely to fail than the gear.
