When I learned to drive a stick (from my dad/brother) I was told never to shift into first unless you were at a complete stop, or no faster than walking speed, much like everyone else has said in the replies. So i usually never downshift into first. Second gear can cruise all the way down to like 3 MPH without bucking if it's a gradual decrease in speed (i.e. cruising to a stop). Hope this helps.
