Default Odometer

I once was riding in my co-workers BMW and it had an electronic odometer just like the tC. And then I saw a little button on his dashboard. I asked him what it was and he said it was to turn off the odometer... Now, considering someone would want to do this... say for recreational/entertainment reasons ofcourse... and they would want to install a little button that would shut off your odometer when you want it to, and then turn it back on just where it left off... how hard/expensive would this be to install on the tC? Anyone see any potential problems (besides this being completely illegal)? I'm not planning to do this...just wondering.

Hey... I think any tampering with the odometer is totally illegal. Thats just my take on it. Are you sure the BMW button really turned off the odometor... or did it just turn off the LCD screen?

It's easy to stop the numbers on the dash from rolling, BUT the computer still records the true mileage on the car. As soon as the dealer plugs into the OBDII computer they will seee what's been going on.

If you're selling your tC after a while...um....wouldn't you get more money for it if it had 10,000 miles vs. 100,000 miles?

until, like Munch said, a dealer hooks up to the diagnostic port and sees the true mileage from the computer. bad, bad idea.

Yeah odometer fraud IS a crime. It's to protect the consumer and the dealer. I'm not sure if it's a felony or misdemeanor....

What about the poor schmuck that buys that car from you? Wouldn't you be ____ed after you paid $15k for a seemingly new/low mileage tC that started to fall apart? Seems kinda mean to me, aside from the legality.

You can't turn off the odometer in a BMW. End of story.
