I think the SRT4 gargle noise is terrible. The slight popping/backfire from a boosted tC is GREAT.

I have no cat and a good sized resonator (full exhaust including megan header) and I only get real noticeable popping in 1st gear when i'm at about 4k then drop off the throttle. Every other gear does it very slightly. 5th gear decels sound especially good. Small pops throughout. When the car is cold I get a small backfire when upshifting 1st through 3rd which sounds nice. Ricer or not, it's mean.

Get a good, well bent, nice quality header back exhaust and you will as a side result get the decel popping.

 

generally it comes from the excess of unburned fuel in the exhaust system. a slightly larger exhaust system works well. with race headers. that seemed to do the trick for my neon when i had it. however your O2 sensors and/or cat converter may end up burning out quicker though.

even when you have boost and backfire thats means you are running too rich of mixture. Adding pipes will not give you any adequate hp increase. Add u live in the OC that noise is a cop magnet even here in florida the cops stop u for a loud muffler.
