Default quick heat and AC question

Normally, I just leave the vent open and the HVAC **** all the way to the warmest setting. This is normally fine for me. Just for the heck of it today, I also turned on the fan. As expected, as is well...

All right, and THEN I pressed the AC button, and then the compressor came on. All right, everything still works fine, but my question is, what does the compressor do in this instance? The "heater" (sorry I don't know how the heater works, meh... so noobtacular) works regardless of whether the compressor is on. I believe it is the compressor I hear when there's a "click" and drop in RPMs... and added noise

so... any point to the compressor kicking in during heating? Just out of curiousity... normally I always just leave the vent open and hvac **** set to hot, no fan necessary.

The A/C system (when in heat/defroster mode) is used as a dehumidifier which will allow for far faster and efficient defogging of windows than in cars w/o A/C.

This is the case with many other cars, not just Scions.
