new radar detectors you can update aswell I believe. I'm pretty sure I read that you can update the 8500 X50 to read new bands and what not somewhere in the manual. 9500i as well i believe.

Speed limit here is 65. i generally run 80ish. Many different law enforcement agencies policing the same area (ie. troopers, sheriffs, constables, and various small cities) in maybe a 20mi stretch to and from work. in the last decade.. been stroked once by a trooper for not wearing a seatbelt (though i was and didn't argue).

Why do i say use your eyes? RD is a false sense of security. All it does is *detect* If the cop running radar is leaving it on scanning the crowds passing, yeah your gonna be ok. But if hes smart, and visually scans for a car speeding and just bumps the radar to record speed (instant-on is a biotch), your pretty much screwed. Besides, if your so deep in la-la land you can't spot the cop in time to slow down before he pops ya, you probably need to be scanning more, or going slower.

^ if it says "Self Cal" it just means its performing a test, if u let it finish it will just restart, and if its broken it will say "Service Required" if not, it will operate normally. Mines calibrates every once in a while, i have the passport 8500x50. Saved me plenty of times.

Pardon my laziness for not searching through the 4 pages, but are these illegal in CA? Meaning if I got stopped for something other than speeding, a cop would give me some bullsh*t for having one?

trust me, my eyes are my primary weapon. they're constantly moving between the median, the curb side, and my rearview mirror. im fanatic about it. thats probably also part of the reason ive yet to get nailed. im always on the lookout.

Not illegal in TX either check your laws/city ordinances. Lawmakers can pretty much do what they want. Heard houston now has an ordinance on smoking cigarettes.

BTW "any cop" ? Not every cop is a dick. I happen to know several and consider them friends (they have the best parties). Don't stereotype the group over a few idiots.

I think the best defense is good eyes. Cops are pretty easy to spot. Whenever I speed, my eyes are constantly glancing around looking for cops.

yup good eyes will make a good team with radar detectors, but eyes alone will not be enough most of the time. Cops always hide anywhere bushes, center medians, under the freeways, bridges and they can detect you even before you see them, RD also makes you a lil relax at least you dont have to focus a lot for cops and it alert you when to keep your eyes more open.

not true they are illegal well the actual radar isnt if you had it sitting in the seat beside you but it wouldnt work from there...... you cant put it on your windshield... it has to be on the dash or above the rvm some cops will still give you crap for having one anyways if you can disconect before they get there i would do so just to save some bs time. this is arizona laws anyways....

I'm pretty sure radar detectors are legal in passenger cars everywhere except Washington DC and Virginia. I know in New York they're legal for passenger vehicles however illegal for commercial vehicles.

^^ yea that laws in NY too but technically that's not because of the radar detector. Any thing on the windshield, GPS w.e gets that.
