Default Regular vs Premium (Shell V-Power or Amoco Ultimate)

Ok. I know the tC doesn't need premium. And I know that premium isn't necessarily cleaner. BUT what about premium gas that's advertised to have more cleaning additives? Would you use premium then? Or would you still stick with regular?

I'm still undecided as to what kind of gas I should buy. I want to save money, but I don't want to ruin my car's engine with bad gas and pay for it later. I was thinking of getting regular gas at a shell station, but I learned that Shell and Amoco only put more cleaning additives to their premium and not their other grades.

I know all gas have additives to clean the engine, but these companiese advertise that their premium has more additives than the standard required by law. Should I buy premium gas from them or just buy their regular gas.

Also, does anyone suggest using STP fuel system cleaners every half a year?

just burn regular. most all gas has "detergent" additives. more additives do not make for better gas. this engine runs fine on 87 "octane" which is the more important issue. this car won't knock at 87 octane. to use a higher octane is just a waste of money unless modifications that you do require a higher octane level.

But we're talking about cleaner burning here. So it really wouldn't make a difference to use gas with more additives?

no, it is a sales pitch. they would like to sell fuel that costs 20 cents more per gallon to owners of vehicles that don't actually need it. one more tankful sold to someone worried about keeping their engine "cleaner" is one more tankful sold. if you are really concerned you certainly can spend the extra money but understand it is money spent so that you feel you are treating your car better, not money spent on actually doing so.

They say all that in their ads so that people like you will pay more for premium in hopes that it will help your engine (not being mean here). I'm just saying... your car will run fine on regular. Many cars have run ten years strong without using fuel additives and 92 octane. Just maintain the car as is recommended and it shall be good for a long time.

I was suspicious as to why they only add extra additives to their premium fuel. I think you're right, surfcity40. It's probably a sales pitch after all.

wow didn't know I didn't have to use 91 octane DAMM!!!

I thought this car would last me longer using or spending this much more cash, oh well next time will try out 89 at the pump

I am so use to me build street civic and preventing knocking noises using 91 octane so need to lose the habit on the tC

^^^^^^^^^^ ??????????

If you hear your vehicle knocking, original poster, then a quick fix would be higher octane, then get it checked out.

NO NO NO
use 87 octane, at 25 mpg and 10,000 miles a year, the additional 10 cents less over 89 octane means 50 bucks pocketed each year!

more importantly 89 octane wont help anything on a stock tC or even most modified ones.
