Rust in the fuel tank inlet?
I have been noticing that the metal inlet for my fuel tank has either some rust or some type of other orange/brown staining and residue. The car only has 12,000 miles, and I never experienced something like this on my last Toyota in 50,000 miles. Seems a bit strange.
If I'm not being clear enough, I am referring to the metal portion behind the plastic screw-off gas cap. Anyway, I wondered if this means that water is finding its way into my gas tank, or if this is just some type of residue left behind from the pumps I am using. It really looks like rust to me. My main concern is that if this part is getting rusty then maybe the inside of the gas tank is suffering from the same fate. I'm going to try and scrub it off, but I would feel better if this is "normal" or at least if I am not the only one.

there was another tc owner here about a year ago i think that had the same problem. The dealer replaced the fuel inlet tube. I think one dealer gave them (can't remember if it was a him or her) a problem and i think they went to another dealer that did replace it.
Hmmm, that's weird. I am glad I'm not the only one, but could this pose a serious threat? I don't know if replacing the inlet alone is the best solution, because I have to wonder what the inside of the tank looks like now.
I'm glad this has been talked about, I really like it when owners talk about problems no matter how miniscule (sp?) they may seem. Makes sure other owners are aware before something happens. I'm always worried about rust in and around my gas tank. Nice to know theres been problems and solutions out there regarding warrantees.
yeah i agree that replacing the whole tank would be a good idea. If you see rust already where it shouldn't be, where else is it?!? And yeah I'd want the whole tank replaced too. Maybe do a search on gas tank for the tC forum, should show up the old post.
UPDATE: Well I did find the old post, was back in Feb this year. But I was wrong there wasn't a solution the dealer just gave him the "oh it's fine, normal" thing. I really thought they replaced the fuel tank or filler neck. hmm.. have to keep digging more. But, rust in the fuel tank isn't normal at all
So yeah definitely get it to the dealer.

Thanks for the link, I somehow missed that thread. It's good to know that at least 6 or 7 other people have the same problem. Someone with an '06 apparently ignored it for more than a year, so I guess it won't cause serious problems. Could be just cosmetic.
Ohh sorry to hear that--- But yep, it would fall under the 3 years or 36,000 mile warranty; There is also a Corrosion Perforation warranty of 5 years/ unlimited mileage- This is for Rust that is coming from the inside out-- check the warranty guide-- It will be under "Corrosion" or "Perforation"
