Default The SCION tC Electrical MELTDOWN!!!

Ok, this is a first for me.

My buddy just got a BRAND NEW 08 tC Auto. Well, as soon as 1/2 mile of the lot we hear a big SCREEEECHH!!!! Then everything goes dead, power, engine, everything. We pop the hood to find nothing. We take it to the dealer, dealer two days later find this.

Loose wires caught around the gear box which in return short circuited the entire car electrical system.

All is covered under the 35,000 mile warranty and the car with 2.1 miles on it. The transmission was ok, but the sensors, both fuse and relay boxes, blown,( i mean every fuse!) about every engine electrical thing blown including EFI, and stereo all because some wires got wrapped around a spinning gear of death LOL

I'll see if i can get some pictures before they clean up the mess off the transmission.

What kind of insurance does he have? He might be able to get them to get a new car for him. I know I would certainly rather have a car assembled off a line in Japan than one rebuilt by a pair of high school dropouts at a U.S. dealership. Especially if I am paying for the former.

i thought u could always return ur car within like 7days or 100miles. Since it wasn't ur friend's fault, he should be able to return it and get a new one.

okay now listen carefully.. IS EVERYONE LISTENING??

YOU ALWAYS TEST DRIVE YOUR NEW CAR BEFORE EVER SIGNING FOR IT. If you don't like it, WALK AWAY.

I bet your buddy is now wishing he test drove it before he signed. And yeah I'd tell them to give me a new car.. What's with fixing it?

Obviously you're right, but still, you expect that all brand new cars of the same model will have the same characteristics. You don't expect one to have screwed up electrics when the rest are just fine. People test-drive a car to get a feel for the model, not to identify problems with the individual car. I didn't drive my tC until after I signed the deal, because I had already driven another tC previously. You can't blame someone for assuming that all brand new tCs should be exactly the same. They all go through the same build process afterall.

Around the gearbox???? How did wires get wrapped around the gearbox? There is nothing moving there unless you are talking about the axle, and there is no main wiring harness near there (and it would take one of the main wiring harnesses to blow a whole fuse box full of fuses)... which leads me to the fuse box.. you say it was blown??? Wiring shorted somewhere else will not damage the fusebox, it will simply blow the fuses on the actual circuits that got shorted.

Not saying something did not happen, but the description given sounds way off from reality.

I think the "Cooling off" period varies from state to state.... and I didn't think there was any at all in CA.... ?

Not all brand new cars of the same model will have the same characteristics. Even though they come off of a robotic assembly line, there are still factors such as humans on the assembly line, transport environmental effects (whether it was dropped, on the bad side of the ship, etc), and of course time and weather.

Don't take any chances. Demand to drive THE CAR that you're about to purchase, even if you already drove another example of the same make/model. If the dealer whines about it, tell him, "I test drive what I'm about to purchase". If the dealer still whines about it, WALK.

You want to make sure you're buying a car that will last, given proper maintenance. They just want to sell you something, ANYTHING.
