They both have 4 doors, a hood, 4 wheels and a rear hatch. Calling it something different doesn\'t make it different.

Like I said, the Mazdaspeed3 is a nice station wagon. I would not mind one when I need the extra room for a child and the luggage space.

You sure can view your opinions but money talks, and alot of talking money is doing is that tCs are outselling Mazda 3s 5 to 1.

Mazda should not have made a sporty sedan or station wagon and see if the young and hip might buy them. It didn\'t work for the Matrix. Not too many WRX were sold in station wagon form.

The xA and xB sold well because they didn\'t look like anything younger people\'s parents would drive.
agreed...

actually station wagons have huge cargo area and hatch backs do not.
difference are minute, but so are the differences between our liftback and a hatckback. but oh no you wouldn't want to call your precious tC a hatchback. wouldn't want to associate our car to a granny station wagon.

Sales numbers for the Mazdaspeed3 vs. tC may be due to a number of factors, including lower price, lower insurance rate since it is N/A, different demographic (speed3 is most likely aimed at 20's-30's as the second car they're buying) perception of the Mazda brand, etc. Also, please reference your sales figures, 3 to 1 is a made up number without them. As for your definition of a station wagon, it is defined by the near equal ratio of cargo space behind the rear seats to that of passenger room, may include a folding third row, and my have a moving rear window. or tailgate. There is also excessive overhang behind the rear wheels, something the speed3 and all 5door hatches lack. Please note that your tC is also a hatch and is considered a 3door. To illustrate, Ford released both a wagon and 5door hatch version of the Focus. Please note the differences.

Focus wagon:

Focus hatch

By your original definition, the first and second gen xB, xA and xD are all also wagons. I am now finished explaining this, hopefully one of these threads can be locked or deleted to consolidate debate to a single thread. Please keep it civil and use logic and reason to support your arguments.

I do not give a rats **** if the tC is a hatback or a door.

Mazda is just naming is \"hatchback\" because they don\'t want to attach the negative stigma of a MOMMY WAGON.

Calling it something else doesn\'t change what it is.

BMW called the X3 and X5 SAV instead of SUV. Why? Because there is a negative stigma of SVUs amongst the \"hip\" crowd. It is still an SUV.

I do not know what your problem is. I think the Mazdaspeed3 is a kick **** station wagon. Unfortunately, majority of buyers still see it for what it is, a station wagon... that\'s why they do NOT buy them. Mazda should have been smart and put all that power and performance into a car that looks nice. Something young people would not be embarassed with.

I like the way the MazdaSpeed looks. I'd never drive it though with it's track record.

Mazda3s are in the same league.

you can take them down tho, the tCs are still quicker.

Good catch, missed that one. They do both get a cabin air filter , unlike my little 1gen xB. Why did Scion make a tray for it and not provide the filter?

Speed3 makes a 14.4 1/4 @ 99 MPH, not too hard to beat with a boosted tC, but hard to catch on a stock tC.

Standard mazda3 runs 16's and would be easy to beat even if you have a 300 lb stereo system installed, I think my xB can even take it.

I've seen a lot of stock ms3's do better than that, but i guess it depends on the driver.

These SI vs. tC threads are pretty dumb. Why would you expect an unbiased answer on either a scion or honda forum? Just sit down, do the research, test drive em, see which one's a better fit. If you plan to go all motor, the SI is by far a better option, if turbo, go tC since it already has a low compression motor with more torque and displacement. In my opinion, turbo'ing a vtec motor just kind of goes against the principal of the whole thing. I checked out both and decided on the tC because I could pick up a used one with low miles for under 15k, whereas a used SI carried a price right next to what a new one would cost. In my circumstance, the tC was a better investment.

The $5,000 price difference between the 2 cars should stop the comparis.

But most of us are tC fans and we defend our rides. Besides, arguments keep these boards from become as exciting as an Air Supply concert.
