You are kidding about the smell right? THIS SHOULD NOT happen on a new car. New car smell yes.. bad odor no... I have bought 4 brand new cars in the past 4 years... anything from a honda Accord, to Acura RSX to a Hyndai Sante fe.... NONE of them smelled of anything ever except new car smell, which isn't so bad afterall...

This is a problem and should be fixed... never do you smell the brakes after 2000 miles... that's ridiculous...

RATTLES! I hate rattles, I can't stand them. 2 days after I got my tC, just like yours i got rattles on the rear passenger side. I took it to the dealer, know the rest...
everytime I get off the car, I keep checking the back hoping find what it is. I took out everything in the car, any thing loose, to the last penny. still theeeeere. I wish I can pick up the car and shake it. So, I decided to request all roads to my work be flattened, every hole, every bump.
Other than I am at peace with my car even in the rain... who am I kidding, I am not. I still have the rattles!

The only time I've noticed a funny smell from the front of the car is when I drive around town for an hour really really fast. Still not quite sure what the smell is.

The tC is my ninth car in the past three years. It definitely makes way more noise in the rain than any other vehicle I've driven. The only one that surpasses it is our E-350 cargo van that has holes in the rear wheel wells (company car, not mine).

All the road noise during rain, which is from the rain, is the droplets hitting a part of the car that's glass, which makes a relatively loud noise each droplet. It's not Scion's or the car itself's fault, but rather the design to have such big windows, glass roof, and a hatchback all in one.

I joke to myself that it's like driving the glass car from "Doug" on nickelodeon.

Check your air filter box and any other areas small animals can hide...and die in. We have found many a nasty odors coming from areas within the engine compartment that have had mice and chipmunksm, that have passed on, getting cooked by the engines heat. :?

I'm not saying the roof doesn't contribute to the noise, that's understandable. The sound of water splashing in the wheel wells seems to be particularly loud. I believe that's what jglonek was talking about.

Welcome to the "joys" of TC ownership.

Do not let people on here convince you that your brand new car should be a noisy rattle trap just because it was "only" $18k. Take it the dealership and bug them until it gets fixed. If they can't fix it, have them swap for a TC that doesn't rattle because there seems to be a few that don't.

I agree with you Nick. My $8k focus has no rattles at all. No matter what you buy, it should be flawless when you get it.

how many microsoft engineers does it take to change a light bulb?
none, they declare darkness a standard.

let's not accept rattles and excessive noise as 'normal.'
if i had wanted a rattly piece of junk, i would have gone across the street and bought a chevy.

flint tc on order, keeping fingers crossed that it's not slapped together in a hurried fashion. i go japanese for their fit and finish, anything less is unacceptable.

Exactly. I bought a new car to get away from rattles because my last car was noisy and had tons. What do I get, a car with even more. Atleast my last car was fast, handled well, and got good gas mileage.

Lootyman, before you sign any papers or take the car, do a very through test drive. Drive it over speed bumps, on rough roads, on the highway. Get it up to 80 and see if the sunroof makes tons of noise. If the car isn't perfect, order another and keep waiting if you insist on getting a TC. I feel dumb because I could have averted my situation if I did the above. A long through test drive would have shown the rattles, and instead of listening to the dealer say "we'll fix it" I should have ran. Pulling out of the lot I was telling the salesman of the issues and he said not to worry, but now I'm getting screwed by two different dealers, and scion corporate.

I have got my tC for six weeks now. I found out the hatchback rattle on day one when
I drove it out the door of the dealer and I immediately knew that Oh...... I had paid for
the car already. Too late !

it's not too late. you just paid 20k for something. even if it is a budget car, that doesn't make it any less money. demand perfection!
especially if there is a toyota service bulletin about the lid, those guys should be all over fixing that hatch for you.

i bet the crazy amounts of glass on the account for much of the rain noise. take a look under your hood and try to engineer some sound dampening material you can lay over the wheel wells. maybe that'll help

Nick I think they don't complain because, either they are happy to get ANY car, anything is better then walking or the have to defend it because THEY KNOW it's pure Crap , Maybe a few are not ____, and they love it!

Either way the problems for a NEW car are out of hand...

i agree that my new car should not rattle, after 100 miles the parts should not be worn out already. so what do we need to do as TC owners? well we need to take 5 mins out of are busy day and call scion and let them know about the rattles. make sure they document your complaint so eventually a TSB will be issued. squeeky wheel gets the grease. because if we don't let them know about the rattles, it will only get worse and louder.
scion customer service, the wait time is maybe 30 secs before you get someone. CALL

If your planning on buying a TC, I would get the dealer to sign something saying they will fix any rattles that come up with in the first 5k miles or so.
