If you want subs, http://www.edesignaudio.com is your best bet.

JL is great stuff, but I think the price is all in the name.

I just ordered my sub from them with the hidden box. I've heard nothing but great things about them and they have great customer service. I can't comment on the sound quality yet as it hasn't come in yet, but I have no worries about it.

Here's the setup i had in my xB:

-2 12" Pioneer Premier 1000w dual voice coil subs
-760w 2 channel pioneer amp
-Tsunami 1.5 Farad capasitor
-Custom box w/ LEDs and Neons

Subs -- $56 each
Amp-- $115
Cap-- $100
Custom box -- $200

Grand total of $527

With JL your buying mostly a name. Don't get me wrong, JL is nice, but for alot cheaper you can get subs that are up to par. Hit a 139 db on a SEALED box with only 190w RMS on each sub.

Bought these componets from Audio-Warehouse.com and SavingLots.com

Check em' out

^^ i disagree...with JL, you're not just buying the name...you're buying the quality! JL is known for their products to outlast most of the competition if not all(as long as it's not abused and broken in properly)

And to help with the answer to the original question...you would have to go to an audio shop in your area and check some prices out...the setup that i have, which is in the signature below, i got for about a grand with installation! Good stuff ain't cheap, and cheap stuff ain't good!

One thing about JL...buy authorized or kiss any sort of warranty goodbye.

What are these boxes for? I've never gotten into car audio at all. Do these boxes in the back mostly increase bass? volume? overall sound quality? How come high end Mercedes or Lexus or whatever cars never have equivalent type boxes? I'd assume they'd want quality sound too?

The boxes house subwoofers, which fill the low end of your music (bass). Most higher end cars have them, they are just hidden though or have higher end speaker components that can handle lower frequencies better.
