Default TC computer

i've read on other boards from EVO owners that when they have engine problems , from racing and high reving, and they take the car back to the dealer for a warranty repair that they were denied repair because the EVO's computer recorded how the care was misused and abused. i know we have a computer that records this same information. my questions are: isn't this illegal? (right to privacy, i mean i should be able to drive my car the way i want right?
and last question: is there a way to erase the data that is stored on the computer??
i ask this question to make some of you aware of how car companies are keeping track of you and if expect a repair for a blown engine, you'll be out of luck.

Legally, no, you can't drive you car however you want. There are speed limits. And if you mean taking it onto the track, I'm sure there was something somewhere that was in that mountain of paper that said something about driving responsibly. They aren't building racecars, so they won't cover it under warantee. And I think there is an agreement that you sign somewhere that agrees to the chip info.

But I'm sure there is a way to just swap out the chip.

i kind of agree with some of your points, but you don't have to be doing high speeds to rev your engine. and no i didn't sign anything about responsible driving or anything about a chip.

Right, but I don't think the high revs are the problem. That's why there is a rev limiter. Then again, their is a speed limiter as well. So, I dont' know.

But did you seriously read every single thing when you bought your car? I haven't bought my tC yet, but every other car I've bought had so much paper work, that if I were to read everybit, I would have been there for a week!

I've heard about that EVO story as well. But it basicly come down on Mitsubishi employees and taking pics and jotting down notes of the EVO's that were raced. Then they contacted the Mitsu dealer and place their information on the nationwide dealer computer. Also Mitsu obtained info from SCCA of EVO members who are members. Yeah, Mitsu has some shady tactics. From sexual harassment cover up to the EVO story.

Wow, if you just went over everything just now, you must not have had much paperwork at all. I'm impressed.

So has anone had a problem with getting their tC worked on yet? I'm sure some of you have been running it ragged!

4 pieces of paper and i'm a fast reader. anyway the computer is called an EDR, event data recorder, manual says that it's hooked up to the airbag computer. guess i won't unhook that. i don't plan on racing my car, but i don't want denial of repair if i decide to rev up to 6K once every year. let's just hope the engine will last 10 years min. with proper care....

There was a post about this before, except they referenced BMW owners who were modding and racing their cars then asking for warranty repairs. In that case, the max revs were stored in the computer, and since they had disabled the rev limiters they were showing too high. This was the main basis for BMW's refusal to cover engine damage due to warranty.

Our cars have rev limiters and speed limiters. I can confrim the rev limiter as I've hit it a few times, but I haven't hit the speed limiter. You can drive your car however you want. If something breaks, it's up to the dealer to prove that your abuse or modification of the car caused the damage.
