Default tC Hatch Rattle (UPDATED: Fix didnt work!)

So I take my tC in for the third time for the stupid hatch rattle. This was a new toyota since the last toyota couldn't fix my problems. Anyway, I take it in and explain to them that Ive had my car serviced twice for tightening the hatch and replacing the hatch struts per the hatch rattle TSB. The tech takes it out for a drive and comes back using the typical tech line "we couldnt find a problem". This ____es me off because the techs always freaken say that. I know I'm not delusional so I grab the service manager and take him out for a ride. There was no noise at first, but I know my tC and I knew what type of roads it liked to rattle on. So we drove around some more, then bingo! tons of non-stop rattling! The manager was in the backseat and he said he isolated the noise to the rear sunroof glass. He said that when he applied pressure to that particular piece of glass the noise stopped. So they gave me a loaner 2005 camry and told me to leave my car for a couple of days. So hopefully this issue will be resolved once and for all!!!

Oh by the way, the service manager was trash talking the tC. It was pretty funny actually. He said the tC is a very noisy rattly car. He mentioned the lousy sunroof. Then he started pushing on the stereo door and talking about how cheap it was and how its so flimsy and makes noises also. I couldnt really defend my car at all, so I simply replied, "just fix the dam hatch rattle and I'll be happy". He asked me why I dont just sell the car HAHA. I wanted to say "give me back full price for my car and you can buy it".

not to rain on your parade , but the likely hood of you getting the rattles fixed are next to zero . I have been back several times for rattles (INCLUDING THE DOOR GLASS ON BOTH DOORS) everytime I have brought it in nothing is done nothing is improved . I just got mine back this afternoon and still the same . I give up on it , done fighting a loosing battle . Gonna get another truck (yeah I know gas is high) but I rather be happy and broke then money in my pockets and miserable . Sounds like a messed up way of thinking but sometimes its the messed up way of thinking that works . Also before the flaming and downplaying starts , I have had pick ups in the past that were nothing like this and had plenty more millage on them and was built alot better .

Oh I completely agree with you. I'd rather pay a little more and be happy by trading in my car. I am hoping they will fix it for real this time. Otherwise, its being traded in within a couple of months. I am so sick of this car. My heart rate actually goes up when the car rattles non-stop.

yeah - mine rattles too... I'm not sure if it's the door, sunroof, or hatch, but it does it every once in a while. Not all the time.

Most cars rattle. My friend's BMW rattles too! I don't have the notorious hatch rattle but my dash did rattle when the rpm is between 3K to 3.5K. Freaking annoying. Or if the road is bumpy, the driver side door rattle too.

Hopefully, these will not get worse later on.

For me its seperate rattles . The door glass in the passenger side door , if you close the door with the window down . You would swear the glass was fallin clear out of the door with the banging noise it makes . The roof rattle I dont know if its connected to the hatch or not . All I know is it sounds like it is originating from the rear part of the roof panel . It sounds like a popcorn seed bouncing up and down on glass . Yes I agree that being mad over rattles is alittle on the extreme side . But this rattle is like that constant drip noise you hear from a faucet late at night when your sleeping . Its the repeated noise that just drives you friggen nuts till you wanna slam the thing in park , get out and slam yer head into a stop sign . I am to the point with the service as well as Scion Corporate that I hate it just as much as I love it .

I just found it hilarious when the service manager asked me "why dont you sell it?". The loaner camry they gave me is soooo much quieter, smoother and more comfortable than the tC. I almost forgot how comfortable a car is capable of being. The drawback is the camry is hideous.

ITS A $16k ECONOMY COUPE! What did you expect an $80k lexus, no you just got good looks. I say turn up the music and quit your _____ing. Or take it apart and fix it on your own, like those who can't afford new cars or "professional" repair.

There are plenty of economy cars that dont rattle you tard. And why would I fix it myself? I shouldnt have to. Its called warranty. You dont seem very intelligent

I dont know why you people complain so much. If you arent satisfied with the dealer go to another or fix it yourself. Chances are other dealers will give you the same run around. Just shut up and save yourself lots of time and fix it youreslf. Dealers dont get paid to look around and correctly install things that the plant did wrong. They get paid to replace stuff until it magically goes away. Havnt you ever wondered why people take their car in and the dealer says oh its the hatch bump stops and replaces them and it doesnt work? Take it back oh its the struts doesnt work again. It just keeps going until eventually they replace the whole area. Some people have taken their cars about several times and had different parts replaced every time with no luck.

My friend had the exact same problem as you. The dealer couldn't track it down... He ended up solving it on his own after tinkering with the dash. He found that it was his shifter ****! He screwed it on too tight or something.

I was well aware of the rattle problem from reading complains on this site. I still bought the car because for the money there was nothing that came close to it. From the moment I pulled out of the dealership the car had the rattle on the rear hatch area. I am however convince that it has to do with the plastic ribs inside the rear part of the headliner. I am going to wait a while to see if Toyota comes up with a TSB that puts an end to this problem. In the meantime I program the ASL feature in the highest setting and problem solved. I think this is why toyota equiped the car with ASL.

I really do not think it is from the ribs inside the rear part of the headliner but further back where the hatch actually closes.

What is the ASL feature? Same as turning the music UP????

Well, the dealership has kept my car in the shop for a couple of days now, hopefully I'll get it back noise free. The service manager himself thinks that its the rear sunroof glass panel. I will post an update to whether the fix works. If it does, you guys tell the techs to look at that specific area for when you take your cars in. I will keep you posted.
