my tC has the most rattles than on any car ive witnessed.

- my doors rattle, where the silver ring is in the middle, just push against it and itll reduce the sound abit.
- the hatch rattles, obviously.
- parts of the sunroof rattles, im guessing the entire top glass is slightly being stretched by the metal parts...
- my torque damper kit rattle everything

when I went in to the dealership and had them look under the head liner for anything that might be loose , they checked everything out and found everything was connected like it should be . They reattached the headliner and I havent heard a noise from it yet . I have even driven down bumpy roads seein if I could get it to happen again , nothing . Im suspecting that maybe the bumped whatever it was that was causing it and inadvertantly corrected the issue . Also do the suggested fix that is listed in another post on here . Concerning the rear screws in the handles on the rear hatch . Loosen those and check to make sure the white pop pins (name of part?)that hold the plastic panel to the metal part of the hatch are fully seated . The plastic trim around my hatch rattles alittle but I can fix that myself and is easy to do .

Diluvium
I agree completely with you on this . It is one of the noisest vehicles I have owned , it even goes beyond the pick up trucks I have owned . As for the ones makin the comments about being only a 17 thousand dollar car . I guess I am just getting old , cuz to me thats a decent amount of money to put into a vehicle . Now if I drove a Kia and paid 7 grand for it ,I would expect it to rattle . I have always heard that Toyota makes well built vehicles , infact friends of mine that have owned Toyotas I have always felt they were first rate vehicles . None of theirs rattled like this or had so many minor probs with them . I have no doubts that the tC is capable of going 150 thousand miles if not 200 thousand miles . My doubt is will the rest of the car still be attached to the motor and tranny when it gets there .

just today i discovered another rattle behind the hatch...the infamous sunroof rattle, it rattles when it's on tilt and none when it's open (probably even more just that the outside noise kills the rattle noise)...i am started to think to trade in my tC for the new Nissan Azeal when it comes out, don't get me wrong i overall love my tC (cept the problem it has) and plus tC is my initial , but it is getting ridiculous as i put more miles on it the worst it gets ...so yea...i think i might be leaving scionlife if i am goin to get the Azeal....

Honestly, thinking of trading in your car because of a "rattle" is stupid....period.

If you dont like the car because it rattles and has many all new car issues I dont think Id trade it for another all new car. Many of these problems are probably from rushing through all the testing and design to get the car out in a hurry.

Umm no it aint. My blood pressure goes up every time I drive the dam thing. Little things like rattles can drive people crazy!!! And FYI, the service guy at toyota was telling me how his tC rattled more than mine and he already traded it in because he couldnt stand the thing.

UPDATE: (09/13/05) So the service dept held onto my car for 4 days. They ordered the parts and replaced the whole entire sunroof and the sunroof housing. They tell me its all fixed. I will admit, it made a small difference. But the thing still rattles. So for many of you who have the hatch rattle, the noise was traced to the connection between the rear glass and the sunroof housing. Thats the source of the noise, not the stupid hatch stays or the rubber stops etc.

Anyone know how to sell a car that is still being financed under toyota motor corp? Im through dealing with this scion crap. The car is a goner.

After having a bigger vehicle (Truck) and going back to a smaller car has not been easy for me . Good luck and hope you get a good deal bud

Sorry you continue to have the rattles in the tC. Mine is just isolated to the hatch rattle which like you, I have tried most of the "fixes" and none work. But mine comes and goes which is strange so I am not sure if it is the rear glass/sunroof housing.

Good luck on your next car.

I'm definitely getting rid of it. But before I do that and take a huge loss, Im gonna research the Lemon Law. Im gonna bring it right back to the dealership today and show them their fixes didnt work. This will be my 4th time bringing it in for the same problem.

Ill keep you guys posted so that you too can get your problems resolved. We shouldnt have to deal with this. Such a waste of my precious time.

Mine has been in the shop for 22 days for the hatch rattle. The dealer "did everything they could do" (not really....didn't even try the fixes on this website) then Scion assigned a case number and a rep came from another city hours away to ride with me. She noticed the rattle right away and called a "master field technician" while she was still in the car. The technician came down the next day (yesterday). He rode with me in the front then rode in the back. My car rattled for him (good boy!). He then spent the better part of yesterday and all of today working on it. I haven't heard anything about getting it back yet but I'm confident. He seemed very interested in the various fixes on this website.

Scion has been FANTASTIC with keeping in touch and showing genuine concern, they have some fantastic people working for them. I've been repeatedly thanked for my patience and assured the problem will be resolved. Toyota service has also been good but not really interested in the fixes posted here (they didn't even try the $4 hatch bumpers even after I furnished a part number). They removed and reinstalled the rear window, spot welded, moved the side hatch catches out with metal washers (they've got to go....rust anyone?), wrapped the hatch catch etc... I will post on this thread when I get my car back and let y'all know if it was fixed and how it was done.

FYI- my noise is a popcorn kernel in an aluminum can type sound, not a thump as some of you have described.

Im glad that is seems like divadax seems to have found someone to at least listen to the problem and admit there is one. Seems like most dealers just blame it on the driver or roads or just dismiss it all together.

FYI: pop can in the door. jk its not a Ford Focus which actually had that as a cause of the door rattles. Very common too and oddly only from the Wayne Assembly Plant (only UAW plant that its made in).

Glad your are letting your car be the guinea pig. Hopefully they will have a doable fix and thus a TSB. The hatch rattle has been a monster to try to diagnose and thus ***. There have been upteen "fixes" but not real 100% fix. Not sure about yours but my rattle sometimes goes several days without rattling and then comes back.

Anxious to hear your results.

Great for you. Ive had my entire roof replaced already and it made no difference at all. The service manager told me he doesnt know what else to do, so he is going to contact toyota for suggestions.

I called and reopened a complaint with scion, and they said a specialist will have to get back to me tomorrow. I straight up told them to buy the car back from me, because I dont want to put up with this crap. So I'll see what this specialist says tomorrow. I mentioned lemon law and all.

My first vehicle was a 1957 Ford truck... This thing was made of solid metal, and i doubt if it had any sort of polyurathane dampers or ANYTHING of that sort to keep the rattles down.. My TC would out rattle, out squeek, out make noises in the transmition... out ____ me off any day of the week compared to that truck. Really these small noises turn into a big headache when you have to listen to them all day long.

The technician is booking his hotel for another night. That's all I know right now. To one of the previous posters....I haven't threatened anything, lemon law etc... These people didn't build my car and are doing seemingly everything possible (including paying for my rental for all this time, sending a tech from HOURS away for overnight stays etc...). I'm really BLOWN away by this level of service and concern and still don't regret buying a TC .....I'll keep y'all posted.

Hey, first time poster.

I've been seriously thinking about getting a new '06 tC, and the main drawback has been the suprising amount of problems I've been hearing, considering the fact that this is a Toyota. I don't get these people defending Toyota so much and trying to brush it off on the 'low price' of the vehicle. 17K (19.2K out the door here in CA) is a lot of money no matter how you slice it. Drop the pride and speak out, cuz that's what it's going to take to get Toyota to fix these things.

Anyways, the two main problems I'm concerned with is the paint chipping and rattle noises. I've been stalking other people's tCs that I've come across, and maybe because it's the car friendly (but not so lung friendly) weather and climate here in SoCal, but I haven't seen any chips yet on any tC that I've run across. I'm guessing I can deal with that.

As for the rattle, I'd like to know just how bad it's been for some of you. Whenever I drive, I ALWAYS have the music on. Not thumpin' so hard the guy in the next car can notice it, but enough. I just sold my 4-year old Jetta today and as she was test driving it, I noticed some squeaks I never noticed before because it was masked by the music. So for you people who've had these rattles, do you drive with the music on? Is it noticeable even with the volume up say, 1/4 of the way to maximum?

Thanx for any responses. And I hope the OP gets his car squared away soon. It sounds incredibly frustrating to be dealing with something like this on a new car.

And oh, by the way, what does TSB stand for? They should have some of the terms I've encountered on this board posted up in the FAQs.

Thanx again.
