Default TC owners w/ 5 spd

Have you hit the rev limiter yet? With a redline of 6200 I'm guessing its going to be easy to bounce off the rev limiter now and then until you get the hang of it.

During aggressive exceleration do you see yourself shifting gears early trying not to contact the limiter or does take a while to reach it?

I haven't hit it yet, and I haven't been taking it easy (I spun the tires shifting into second out of the dealer lot.) If I'm accelerating hard I might shift at 6000 or so, but you'll feel it and be ready to shift by that point. It's not like I have to watch the tach all the time, you just get used to it.

I used to drive a BMW and I can tell you that 3500RPM @ 75mph is customary for a car that has higher end torque. It is a good thing if you want to be able to still push the car at high speeds.

It's geared low. My MX-3 is around 4000 RPM at ~78 MPH, but it's also about 5 times as loud and 10 times less comfortable. The tC is quite happy cruising at 80 or more and is still very quiet and comfortable. Plus, if you need to pass somebody you don't need to downshift, just mash it.

When I test drove the TC I was hitting the rev limiter, but I was driving it pretty aggressive.

My matrix was cruising at around 3000@75mph, and it had a tiny 1.8L... well, as long as I know that the engine was designed to cruise at this speed, I'm happy

i've hit the rev limiter a few times in 3rd while gettingon the highway.. fun fun..

The gears seem really short.. kinda like it, wish I had another gear.

I know if uncomfortable for you to see your Tach sweatin at 3500/4000 RPM, but it is normal with the way the car was built. Anyone that's rode a streetbike knows, it'll be okay.

Do you think that is too high of a rev?

If you read the owner's manual you'll see something like this (I don't have it in front of me at the moment):
Maximum Speed: 127 MPH
Maximum Sustained Speed: 127 MPH
The car will run all day just fine at fast highway speeds.

The top speed is governor limited so im sure the car could go even faster if you could disable the governor.

I am sure these numbers are slightly off, so dont quote me.

From the Owner's Manual there are maximum speed ratings for each gear.
1st: 29 mph
2nd: 55 mph
3rd: 77 mph
4th: 109 mph
5th: Governer limited to 127 mph

This info may or may not be useful but it seemed pertinent.

WOW you guys are fast to respond!! Ok so it sounds like you really have to wind out the engine to reach the rev limiter. That is a good thing.

Yeah, I'm really surpised they opted for a 5 speed tranny instead of the 6 speed which is becoming the norm.

hahaitzskippy....does the rev limiter kick in at 6200 or beyond? I know most of the factory tachs are advanced in case you over rev. What is shown as 6200 (on your tach) is actually lets say 5900.

Once the Forced Inductions kits come out watch the rev limiter go up or be removed completely. I bet you can squeeze more power if the rev limiter it raised. Of course stiffer valve springs would necessary.

Well even if you did squeeze more power against the rev limiter, the ECU would still be working against you. What you would need is to have someone flash the ECU to dump the rev limited and up it to your specifications. I wouldn't advise it though, the rev limiter is there for a reason. I've seen aftermarket chips that you can slap into the ECU but from what I've heard they only last for a couple minutes before the ECU figures out what's going on and overrides it.

I had a 2000 Ford Contour SVT and I constanly hit the rev limiter on that thing. The main problem was that the engine felt like it had so much more power to dish out after the rev limiter. I am sure that if I could have removed the limiter I could have gotten another 1000 RPMS out of it.

WHen driving the TC I feel the same thing. Seems to stop right when it is taking off.

I'm starting to think it's some sick marketing tactic to make us buy the overrated and insanely overpriced TRD supercharger. With the installation of the Stage 1 setup they flash the ECU and release the "bottleneck" that everyone's been talking about with this engine. Once the Stage 2 setup becomes available (sometime next year) they will flash the ECU again... so it seems like they are crippling our poor tC's and making us buy their ____.... bastards.

I never hit the rev limiter, not yet at least, she only has 30 miles. I'm sure it will be easy to do though, im so used to a 8k rpm redline in my old honda..

Does the TC actually have a rev limiter? The owners manual makes no mention of it, it warms of pushing the tach into the red zone and over revving it on the automatic. You guys may want to play it safe, you don't want to melt that aluminum engine down for beer cans before it's time., hehe!!

Love my Dark Cherry Pearl!!!
