tC wind deflector recall is a band-aid only not a fix
The response by Toyota to the obvious design weakness is very disappointing. The laminate they have placed on new and existing deflectors is nothing more than a band-aid approach. It does not correct the design flaw. The glass is likely to shatter when in use under normal driving conditions. They didn't fix that. They just satisfied NHTSA's concerns over safety. They should REPLACE the wind deflector with something that will not shatter under normal use. I can't tell if this glass they are using is even tempered. All the other glass has a tempered label except this piece.
My deflector shattered. I'm not certain anything ever hit it. Certainly nothing hit it immediately prior to it shattering and I was driving around 40mph. I believe the glass actually developed cracks just from the internal air pressure exerted on it from closing the door. Toyota could pop out a deflector design made of some polycarbonite material that would look virtually the same as this glass instead of this band-aid laminate which is the cheapest approach to avoid trouble with the FED's. This laminate obviously has an adhesive which WILL deteriorate, the glass will still shatter, AND pieces of glass will still shower down upon you when you least expect it. It just will happen less often than it would have without the laminate. I bet if this was truly tempered safety glass it wouldn't need a laminate.
I almost got stuck with the cost of replacing the glass on my tC with 14K miles but my dealer, Toyota of Irving TX, covered it after I complained. There are good people.
There, I feel better. Bet this topic gets locked in a hurry. I'm not so sure about this forum for Toyota owners that is 'owned' by Toyota.
I intend to 'register' my complaint with Toyota's customer care and I hope everyone that agrees with does so as well. Maybe there's still hope for this corporation if there's enough good people in charge.

I don't know the details, but the topic has been covered a lot here.
This is not owned/operated by Toyota/SCION, so it's not going to get deleted for that reason.
Hopefully, Toyota will respond to your letter - I'd be interested in hearing what they say to you.
