Default To those that get bad gas mileage, special break in oil?

To those that get bad gas mileage, did you change your oil before 4000-5000 miles? And to those tjhat get good gas mileage when did you get your first oil change?

I only live 3 miles from work and in city driving and get 27-28MPG shifting around 3000rpm. My first few tanks were 22-23 but it eventually went to 25 then 26 then 27 and sometimes 28 in the city. I didnt change my oil until around 4000 miles because I had read that someone that changed their oil before 1000 miles noticed the oil was much different. It might be special break in oil similar to what Honda uses. Just wondering why there is such a huge disparity with gas mileage.

And no, I dont drive slow, my last car, a Maxima, got like 11MPG. My Civic got worse than EPA in the city, just wondering why my Scion TC gets much better MPG then EPA estimates.

I get decent mileage (at least what should be expected).

I first changed mine at 1500 (so, after break-in). And then at 5000, and then regular intervals after that.

My mileage is pretty bad, but it's almost all city and I'm fairly hard on it quite often. Initially changed the oil & filter at 200 miles (cheap Shell Formula 5-30 & Fram ToughGuard), didn't see any metal or dirt and it was still very clean. Now at 2200 miles, will likely get the free dealer oil change at 6 months (I won't have 5k on it by then), then promptly change that out with Castrol Syntec, which is my preferred synthetic. I'm hoping the milage will improve with more miles and more conservative driving.

i changed my gas at 2500, 5000, and will prolly go in at 7500... i do intervals of 2500 miles so ill be ready to maintain my S/C when i do get it.

BUT, i figure such great maintanence would only increase my mileage, but i get far less than EPA estimates, like 12mpg less than what i should

Changed oil at 1000 miles. Then again 3000 miles later. Used organic oil at the 1000 mile mark and switched to Synthetic at 4000 mile mark. I get on average 27-32 MPG. I drive a 50/50 mix of city/highway.

i changed my oil via the free oil change @ 3k miles, and then used the 2nd free oil change @ 5700 miles (3 months came before i made it to 6k). i get 23 mpg on average. I hardly ever go WOT (but with my I/H/E/pully install over the last 2 days, that may change ;) )

i change my oil at the recommended 5,000 mile interval. i have 15k on my tc now and I have consistently gotten 27-28 miles per gallon. if you change your oil more often just to hopefully get better mileage, you are definitely wasting your time and money. furthermore, repeatedly changing the oil sooner will not prolong engine life. i have a toyota truck with virtually the same engine as the tc ( same block, etc. ) it has 200k on it. so, i think it is safe to say every 5k is more than enough unless you plan on driving your tc for 30 years or so.

redlined and smoked the tires at 800 miles....first oil change and swaped to synthetic at 3k. change oil every 3k. freway driving i got 29-31mpg with a cai, subs in the back and doin 70-90mph on cruise control. as for city mpg, i can't say...driving like a nut and reving on stupid slow a$$ drivers and crusing with my buddies...the worst i got was 10mpg...haha

special breakin oil????and honda uses it...is this in the owners manual? i would assume if a car manufacturer uses this type of oil and will significantly affect/improve a cars mileage that they would somehow tell the owners....

first engine oil change was at 1000 miles... switch to synthetic... also did the gearcase oil at the same time... also went with synth... and then i do engine oil chnages at 4000 mile intervals... OH,,, and while for some it may be snake oil.. i also use ZMAX oil additive.. worked for me..

i get on average 320-340 per tank.. with little A/C use... and 80% HW 20% CTY driving.. i can push 360 on a good tank...

one interesting observation i have made... is that my gas milage drops slightly after a fresh oil change... it comes back pretty quickly though.. i can always count on getting a max of 320 miles out of the tank after the change... then it will slowly creap up after maybe 2 tankfulls.... oh.. mines a 5spd..

I have been running Amsoil full synthetic oil since 3,600 miles on my Auto TC and was getting 330+ miles per tank until it dropped at about 275 per tank. Looking at my gas & mods. records I thought it was either my Weapon-R SRI or my ZPI s-pipe but after switching to an Injen CAI and seeing little or no improvement my only guess is the ZPI pipe now. Can this be true? Any other Guess or experiences guys and girls?

i would lean towards the intakes... the s-pipe.. unless it is crushed and restricting flow.. would really do nothing.... i was running a CC s-pipe before installing the WR header and did not notice anything.. if you want to test it.. and you still have your stock airbox.. just slpat the airbox in and see if the milage changes..

i guess i'm different, but i can see why.
this was my first stick shift car
when i got it, for the first 4000 miles, i got around 28 city miles
that was because i never shifted above 3000 rpm

since then, i've been getting 25 mpg, half city half highway.
recently, i've been watching my shifts and i have upped it to 28 mpg again
