Too Much Air???
Has anyone ever heard of an intake getting too much air and "blowing out" the MAF Sensor? My sensor broke (stopped functioning) and the dealer told me that too much air caused it to fail, I raised the BS flag on that. Unfortunately I had a 4 hour drive ahead of me and needed to hit the road asap, so I was forced to pay 200 dollars to have the MAF sensor replaced. I'm thinking I should call toyota or scion headquarters and complain because I think it should be covered under warranty because I think it was just a defective sensor in the first place. Any ideas???? I have a K&N typhoon installed by the way.
that can't happen.. there was probably some filter oil built up on it, or it was just defective. I'd complain. ask them how exactly it would be blown out by too much air. they just don't want to the warranty work..
Do you have in writting what the issue was and why it wasn't covered by warrenty? If not that's a silly mistake.
Phone up Scion HQ and throw a ____ fit.
Mention things like the fact that the car is marketed to the aftermarket car parts crowd and then you get screwed at the dealer, tell them you want "in writing" PROOF that this is why your MAF sensor broke.
Also might be worth sending K&N an email and asking them to comment, tell them that their intake just cost you $200 more and you need backup from the manafacturer to fight this.
ps. Lots of people having MAF issue I notice, I wander if it's a defective batch, or if the filters really do cause that much oil to build up.

Thats what I think, I think the MAF's are just defective, trust me I plan on making some phone calls, I have toyota and scion corp on speed dial after dealing with the sunroof issue. Thats a good idea calling K&N I was too teed off at the dealer to think about that. I have all the paperwork that was done on the car, I keep all that stuff in my glove box. I can't see oil build-up being the problem as there was no oil on the sensor when I pulled it off. It was clean as a whistle, looked just like the brand new one they put in. I wish I had more time to deal with it there but I had to get home, I'm in the air force and I had to be in to work at 11 pm and it was already 4 (it was a 4 hour drive home for me)
I have never heard of too much air flow, unless you have different internals or forced induction then it might happen. I have heard of the oil in the filters fouling the MAF sensor, but if it was clean it and all you had was a typhoon intake, the sensor had to be defective.
turbo 240sx and 300sx owners relocate the MAF inches down from the throttle body (between the TB and intercooler) to get more accurate readings. that has been known to destroy MAFs regularly, but i've never heard of it happening on any NA vehicle.
