Default TRD exhaust vs. Magnaflow

Firstly I didn't want to hijack a previous thread so I started this one. I'm trying to decide between the TRD or the Magnaflow axle back exhaust (Gabe's system). Can anyone tell me which system produces a deeper, throatier sound? When I spoke to Gabe he said that his system is relatively quiet but I was looking for something that produces a louder and deeper sound. I also did a search and noticed some members saying that their Magnaflow produced a nice deep note. Also, has anyone removed the resonator? How is the sound?

Thanks for the help guys!

sadly both suck. why you may ask? well both are horrendously overpriced. and the magnaflows dont have the best design/flow/sound/build quality compared to other universal mufflers. and i know how much those magnaflows cost. (approx30-75 dependant upon supplier) most custom exhaust shops will sell a magnaflow installed for under 150 or approx 200 for a setup similar to gabes. sorry bro. just been in the business a lil bit. i know . i know. workin at midas is what killed me. now i have to unleash the auto industries secrets any where that i know the facts. oh and for the sound you looking for go elsewhere magnaflows normally produce a farty sound when there is no resonator present. i'd say use a high flow resonator or a cherry bomb in the resonators place it will produce a nice calmed smooth throaty growl with just about any universal muffler. but if you run a magnaflow with a straight pipe it will sound poppy and like crap. trust me. any muffler will on this car just poppy crap . lol it may sound a lil better on a tc but still. larger displacement normally reduces the "poppyness"

Interesting. Any suggestions on what brand and type of muffler and resonator?

Thanks. :D

ok first off TRD uses a Magna Flow for the xB and xA systems. So we really can't say that the two can be compared right there. Also magnaflows are better than just any universal muffler. The tips are welded from the inside, there are two different baffle designs for the picky buyer, they come with a Lifetime warranty, and they are all made in the America. Every midas in america is on comission so they will sell it cheap and install it cheap, so say good bye to your stock muffler. They will cutt off the inlet pipe and go from there to install it and get you otta there for thier next comission.
Magnaflows only produce a fatty sound when you don't have the right combination, the combination on any muffler will result in a fatty sound. Every muffler shop is supposed to know their products to give the right advice to you; the consumer.
Using a straight pipe to a muffler is not recomended with any vehcile, especially if you don't want police troubles or bad performance. I am using magnaflow for all my import systems because they have the right baffle design, quality and perfect tone needed for any import driver. I never install straight pipe to a magnaflow, unless instructed by the customer.

Dang, someone else who's in the know. I've known for a while now that Magnaflow mufflers generally run $55.00 a piece wholesale or jobber, whatever the term is for a shop to purchase from the warehouse. And that tips runs around $12-14 for a $20 retail tip.

Check this out. At the last wednesday night meet, an experienced car tuner brought a meter out. He measured my Tanabe at 78 dB, we measured his xB w/ the really tucked custom exhaust at 70 dB, then we measured a Magnaflow equipped axleback and it was 95 dB! And all of the measuring was conducted as prescribed by the CA Vehicle Code!

Man, that's cuttin' it close. I've been stopped for my windows already, and having a Magnaflow would be adding fuel to the fire. I can hear it now, "You should know better, yada, yada, yada".

umm brad what set-up was at 95db? Toybox1 was at 79db and so was brain with the same axle back. So which one are you talking about? You didn't measure mine either, howcome?

Than that means they were not installed corectly. Go to a team NVS meet and you can hear about 4 memebers with the magnaflow axle back. they are happy with the low tone/ perfect sound.

Gabe, yes we measured Dave's (toybox1) and yes hotbox05 does go to the Team NVS meets. He was at the last meet I went to. I'm just posting the findings I had in response to someone else's, not your's, thread.

We measured the exhausts as described by the CA Vehicle Code. You weren't around when we did the measuring.

Notice, I didn't mention any names until you brought it up.

And don't get on hotbox05. He was just stating his opinion and experience, just as you can state your opinion and experience. Nuff said.

If you have a problem w/ what hotbox05 stated, PM him.

Just wierd how a magnaflow exhaust that I am pushing is quieter than the ones you have measured. Just wanted to know what was on the vehicle so I can advise a different pattern for a lower decibal.
And as for hotbox05 if he can't answer my questions than what experience does he really have than? I should call him about this topic, wonder if he will call me back.

Brad, turn off the flame thrower for a second man.. Yes he asked about a name because he wants to know where you would get a number like that. If someone came out and made a remark about you I'm sure you'd like to know the source as well, so don't make a point of "bringing up names" unless you wouldn't ask the same. This is his business, it's how he puts food in his and his family's mouth. This is (as far as I know) a hobby for you, so maybe the weight of this doesn't come down on you for how important it is for him to make sure his business keeps the rather stellar reputation it has earned with the community.

Funny, I must be blind. No where in my post do I see a person's name, screenname, business name, or whatever. I did mention Tanabe and Magnaflow. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's is my original post:

"Check this out. At the last wednesday night meet, an experienced car tuner brought a meter out. There are plenty of muffler shops located in the 9 bay counties that install Magnaflows, so you cannot say that I am singling any one shop out. Do I need to start listing them?

I must have a different meaning on "flaming" then. My comments were such and not "flaming" anyone. My opinions were just the facts being stated from an UNBIASED point as no specific names were mentioned. How can anyone one person be flamed if they were not mentioned? Hmm.

I just stated the facts on three different exhaust systems measured as described by the CA Vehicle Code. No busineses or names mentioned. Just like when a magazine does a test of different products.

If someone construes it as different, and reads something else, that's on them.

And maybe, just maybe, questions haven't been answered because the other party isn't online?[/b]

I know from the performance stand point, I am realy like my stylis axle back, one of the best sounding exhaust that I have heard is a california turbo style muffler with a anza resonator tip. This guys exhaust is already rusting after only six monthes, and will probably rust through before he has had a year, genenic muffler, sound great cost him 30.00 bucks and he had the local vato, essays hook it up. got what he paid for.

I would like to see a copy of the California statute with the testing procedures, also if If a radio shack db meter was used, Those have a plus or minus swing of 6db. Was the testing done using the the precribed medium. Brad, I know your a cop, but cops don't always get it right. this about acoustics.

As far as pricing goes, When you own a business, you have overhead, rent for the building, tools, wages, insurance, there is a whole topic on it own, price what a million in liability will cost you monthly, the health benefits and unemployment insurance. Then sell a muffler at cost. I don't think hot boxes employer would be too pleased if someone notified them that he was selling muffler out back door at cost. when you work at theses places, that is a benefit of working there, and should not be abused.

It come comes down to quality, and brand preference, run what makes you happy, fits your budget, and sound goods to you. You get what you pay for in the end. Enough said. Bill

Bill, if you read my post, I didn't mention anyone, any business, just what MY findings were. Every measuring device has its tolerances. I just stated what I found. Even if its +/- 6 dB, who cares. I just posted what I found in my test.

You are correct, NO ONE IS PERFECT.

Obviously someone called you and toufic, just re-read my post.

No person or business was flamed. End of story.

Default I'm all about my full exhaust from precisionmuffler.com

Hotbox05's report that the Magnaflow mufflers sound like crap is a load of crap. He must not have heard mine yet.

I love the way my box sounds since Stylis hooked me up. It would sound even better (deeper) if I hadn't had the DC header installed, but it still sounds terrific. Ask to hear my ride next time you see me at a meet.

Better yet, ask for a ride and I'll let you experience the raw power that my precisionmuffler.com-powered box puts out! It'll make your little weebles shrink up and go hide!

Brad, I apologize, I din't mean for it to come off that way. But reading a db meter is a science, to many variables, and with outside factors it can be read wrong, Your right no one is perfect, I know that I am far from it.

I was naming you or or making any refernece to you about a business cost, I just want the peeps to know that is not all profit in a business, not to mention the cost of tools and supplies needed to just to keep the door opens, for that matter Electricity.

I did not say that you flamed anybody, I am more interested in the medium of the test, and the statute creteria. Sorry for the misunderstanding, Bill

Where is the L-O-V-E?

By now my Mom would of made my brother and I hug each other… (I hated that)

F.Y.I. (For Your Information) I have the header back system with Manaflow stuff and I love it. (Performance added and tone… but remember I am a musician and I have lost most of my hearing.) Like 2fixA said sound is a subjective thing. But I would put the system in again if I had it to do all over.

My two cents… Now, Let’s talk T-E-I-N…..
