I have been planning on doing this for a few weeks but I must give credit to urban_assault_XB for being the first to post this idea and giving me the motivation to do it.

If you dont have the extra money to spend on a intake or cant see spending all that dough for such a little gain than this might be the ticket for you.

I chose a $ 25 Ractrive air cleaner with a 3 inch inlet.

Alright open the air box and remove the stock air cleaner, then loosen the clamp at the throttle body and remove the hose to give you some room. Take the air inlet hose that goes into the bottom of the air box off. Cut it at the point where it is ribbed. See picture.



Simple enough now attach the air cleaner



Now reinstall the lower hose with air cleaner to the air box



Put the intake hose back on the throttle body and close up the air box. Your Done




I think for $25 bucks and 20 minutes worth of time you cant go wrong.

After driving the car, it sounds alot better it has a nice tone and I do notice a slight diffrence in throttle response and power in the 3000 to 6000 rpm range.

Again if you dont have the loot and have 20 minutes what have you got to lose.

I will bring my Xb to my friends shop and dyno it to see if there is any diffrence. Of course you will all be the first to know.

You could get some ducting...but that might slow down airflow (since it's ribbed)

 

Nice job looks great, just like mine PM me when you get it dyno'd. Like you said I felt the car pulls a little stronger in the upper rpm range.

Thanks for the pics. . . where did you get that filter? I thought Reactive was an APC filter. . . guess not.

 

nice job man, thats EXACTALLY what i just did, although I want to elminate the stock air box from the equation, but i dont know where to put the maf sensor. throttle response does seem a little better and it definatly sounds nicer, which really was the only effect i was looking for

 

I just completed mine... It actually sounds exactly the same. I'm not sure if it's any hp improvement either. We'll see when I get it on the freeway!

But hey, I really just wanted to get rid of the stock paper filter, and this mod is actually cheaper than buying a drop-in K&N filter, and probably works better!

You are the man!!!!!

YOu think the xB was hard? The xA was a PAIN IN THE @SSSSSS!!!!! Talk about no room under there. The battery wouldn't fit. . . but after about half an hour of fiddling, it somehow just fell in!

I will post pics tomorrow! This thing sounds MEAN!! A little on the loud side, but if I go easy on the left pedal, it's ok. It's not like these cars were Lexus quiet to begin with. I think power decreased a little in the 500-1000RPM range, but when you get past 2500, if seems as if there was a small bump in power. But the sound is absolutely wonderful. It no longer sounds like a whiney cow, but like an angry monster! If you are ever in CA, I will buy you a 6 pack!

Duh j/k Yes I did.

Mine doesn't really sound louder though. Which is good, I didn't want loud. And I also had to move my battery just slightly. But I did buy a bigger filter.

It does kinda growl at high rpms though... I definitely think it's a better and cheaper upgrade than a drop-in or TRD air filter!

I'm surprised you aren't seeing as big of a difference as I am. . . must be the filter type. Have you tried flooring it?

 

only prob is that without the stock filter there is an air gap at the air box clam shell soo unfiltered air can enter. what ya gotta do it tear up a stock filter and just use the outer sealing ring to keep all the dirty air out

 

better hope u dont get ne water in that guy!!

 

The filter does not look like it rides any lower then the stock one. So getting water into it, would be about as hard as getting water into a short ram.
