Default using 0w-40 synthetic oil ok?

hey i was wondering if our car is safe using 0w-40?

ive used 5w-30 mobil1 for the past few months and now i just recently switched to 5w-20, possibly getting better fuel mileage from what i slightly notice..

are 0w-40 oils beneficial compare to 5w-20 and 30?

thanks

you need to stick with 5w30.... it's not good to just switch things around like that.

Although I give Toyota the benefit of the doubt, I'd say that its a really good idea not to deviate from the manufacturer's recommendation when it comes to engine oil - especially on a Toyota motor.

lol it won't hurt an '05 tC at all, '06 and '05s are basically the same. What I meant is I have friends who have factory recomendation of 5-30 oil that run 5-20. It's better on mileage and it makes the car run a little lighter.

actually the only year that can run 0w-30 which im running is the 07 engines. They added oil squirters into the cylinders, previous years dont feature this.I do get slight better gas mileage and i live in california. When i useto work at lexus i could get it for free and its damn exspensive stuff(around 8.00 a qt i think) Toyota fully synthetic 0W-30 thats used in the new LS460s

2005 tC - 5W-30
2006 tC - 5W-20
2007 tC - 5W-20 (or 0W-20)

DO NOT use 0W-40 no matter what year you have. I see that you are down in GA. It stays and gets pretty hot down there. The 0W is too light weight of an oil for you. You use the 0W in the north as a lighter weight oil during the winter. The 40 is too heavy for you even down in the south. It can cause sludging issues with the engine and can do other damage to your engine as it is so thick that it will not lubricate well. Stick to the factory specs.

Just pick one and stay with it . NEVER change weights in oil if you can . Being in Ga , what the Hell do you want to use 0-40 for anyway ? Damn . 10-30 synthetic is perfect in most climates , especially yours ! I am in Va and only run 10-30 synthetic . It was made for Georgia

He got his numbers from a TSB that states 2006 models can use 5w-20 even though the caps say 5w-30.

I have a 2006 tC, and use 5w-20 synthetic Pennzoil Platinum.
Here is a link to a Used Oil Analysis I had done to prove that the oil is doing great: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...439728#2439728

^^ thanks.

Like he said, I get those numbers from a TSB that was put out by toyota. The 05 remains the same. The 06 should now take 5w-20 (even the dealers will put that in an 06), and of course the 07 was made with the correct oil filler cap.
Why did they change the 06 and not the 05? I dunno, but they did. Check out his link above ^^^ or look up the tsb on your own. This has already been discussed A LOT however

It's true that the 2 oils are very similar, but regardless, they put out a TSB to solve a problem. They don't just put out TSBs for the fun of it. OF COURSE the manual is not going to be updated for the TSB, what do you expect, every dealer to come find you and hand you a new manual? lol But as we said, the two are very similar, but they obviously put out the TSB for a reason, so i'll be putting 5w-20 in my 06
