Vapor Lock
Hey everyone...just picked my IIP tC up this past Monday (the 4th).
I had to make trek home from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg and used almost 3/4 of the tank so decided to fill it up yesterday after work.
I pulled up to the pump and began pumping and immediately got vapor lock. I thought it was just the pump acting up at first so started moving the pump around and got an angle that it took and was fine for a few gallons then vapor lock again.
It kept doing it so finally I just stopped because I didn't want to perhaps damage something. Anyways I put about half a tank in to take the needle slightly over the 3/4 mark.
Has anyone else had problems fueling their tC's??

this problem has been addressed several times......try searching........I came up with only one result by typing in "fuel backpressure nozzle" and clicking on "search for all terms"....this is what you're looking for.......

Yeah I did search 'vapor lock' and didn't really see anything...never thought to type in your search.
But thanks for the link. I'll give it a try w/ the half out method but if it keeps doing it, I'm going to Scion about it.
Thanks!

i just noticed the same thing happening this weekend. i filled it up fine at a mobile the first time. second and third, i was at a sunoco, so i thought it was their pumps. i then went back to teh same pump at the same station, and crap... it *clicks. damn it... i still can't figure it out, but i'll try the 1/4-1/2 way out next time. hope gas doesn't gush all over me.
oh, heres the gist of the other thread. I didn't post it, but someone else did (and then got flamed for it) but anyway, its good info now!

I know i'm a bit late on the subject but I figure I can add some of my knowladge to this. I'm a fuels tech for the air force so I know a little bit about how all this works. The cutting off is going to largely depend on the sation and condition of the pumps, how fast they flow and how much volume is being pushed through, cobined with the angle of your inlet valve the higher the rate the more backpressure and more shutoffs. Another factor is outside temp and fuel temp, the higher they are the more vapor you get and the more pressure that builds up in your tank and piping and without a proper vent it has nowhere to go so it causes the nozzle to shutoff. Theres no real fixing the problem other than slowing down the flow rate or replacing your fuel systems pipng with a better vented system.
I get that at a certain pump at a particular station everytime I make the mistake of using that pump. it's the only one that does it though, and I've filled up at dozens of different pumps.
it's the pump, not your car.
