Very Annoying Engine Sound!
Whats up all,
I joined this forum because everyone seems very cool and willing to help others out, unlike this other forum I was on. Well here goes nothing....and believe me I searched this whole forum for my problem but nothing.
When my car is fully warmed up and in idle position, there are 2 noises that come from under the hood. 1....is a ticking sound which i have learned is the VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve). I know it is suppost to tick. Thats its job. My main concern is this other noise I hear that is coming from the engine/heat sheild area. It is a purring annoying sound. I cant really explain the sound. Sounds like rolling the letter "r" with your tounge in spanish if that makes any sense. Its slow and loud when in idle position. When you start to go it gets faster and louder. Some people thought it might be an exhaust leak. I brought it to the dealership and they said they took off the heat sheild, checked gaskets and everything and they said nothing seems bad. They gave me the run around and said its normal, yet they had no other tC's available to drive and see. You can hear the sound when your in the car with the windows up and radio off. And you can def hear the sound from outside the car. Just sounds ruggish and not right. Especially for a new car (13000k). Im gonna try establishing relationship with another dealer and see if they can help me out. But I was gonna see if anyone hear knows what I am talking about. Comments very much appreciated.

P.S. If this is a wrong forum please let me know and I am sorry.

this is not the same as the gotti saga (i don't think)
Stu had a tapping issue, this is more a purr from wut hes saying
i would try working with another dealer, and test drive another tC with a master tech or shop foreman

Make sure you dont have anything hitting your strut bar. After installing my DC Sports strut bar, I noticed a tapping. After inspecting under the hood, there was something hitting the strut bar when idling. I put a rubber pad inbetween the two, and everything was good.
ok, i notice the constant ticking sound from under the hood as well. and flavaz mentioned it was the "Vacuum Switching Valve". what is that???
so it's normal to hear that consistant ticking noise the whole time the engine is on? it just sounds like an old car to me. almost like my 91 4runner, haha, just a little...
thanks

another question:
i got an 06 auto. it's a little hard to shift from P to R for some reason. do i just need to break it in or is that not normal? it seems like my plastic cover for the shift gate will eventually start ripping.

I also noticed a ticking sound, but it was after i installed my intake, i think its normal, no problems with it yet, and if there was a problem the thing on the air filter should detect it and the check engine light should turn on.

i hate how our engines make that purrring noise!
my mother got a new civic, and i think its ugly and cheap, but the engine is nice and quiet. (oh, i guess it helps to say im talkin about idleing). ours do sound like an old car!
but i always hear a slight rattle when ever i go from park to D or R, just for about a second, nothing mechanical, but it just sucks cuz new cars (mine has 3300 miles) are supposed to be tip-top shape, you know? super smooth and quiet, rattles emerging after 20000+ miles. and when its cold, when i back up from park, go to N then D, it shifts really hard, in comparison, in my fiance's 96 corolla is still smooth even when its real cold start-up. and lately ive been noticing a shimmer in idle every once in a while, like when you could, you shiver? maybe my engine gets cold? =)

man i got this horrifying tapping rattle noise too
oh wait thats an ingalls engine damper
hehe
but if it sounds like an RRRRRR noise , it depends on the loudness of the exhaust it might just beyour exhaust flow pressing hard against the pipes, but i would have to be there in real life or get a sound clip or something
and i doubt they took your heatshield off and checked all the gaskets lol
they said yup thats a motor and said have a nice day and enjoy lol

you should see a regular tc.. with a regular exhaust.. I bet that purring noise you're hearing is coming from your TRD exhaust.. remember that the sporty exhaust has a resonator that gives it that throaty purr... that might be what you're hearing..
remember another thing too, not a lot of mechanics have the greatest hearing either, so they say nothing is there, it's because they cannot hear it, too many years around an impact wrench.. oops!
but yeah i think it might be the trd exhaust.. listen to a stock on and i bet it's quieter with hardly that purr..
