Default Week Old tC Won't Start? WTF!

Hey everyone -
I got my BSP 5-spd last weekend and it has been great since. Yesterday I filled her up (cheap Gas becase it was close to school) and drove it back home. I tried to start it up last night and the engine won't begin to crank. Battery isn't dead, everything works. When turning the key I can hear the Fuel Pump hum in the back...

I was wondering if anyone knew what to check for? I was thinking maybe bad gas? Or water in the gas (recent heavy so-cal rain). I am going to have to have it towed to the dealer, but if there is something I can do before hand to check before I waste my time, I would appreciate the help. Maybe a fuse? Where would the starter fuse be located?

Thanks!

Did you press the clutch pedal to the floor. Carpet mats that slide forward will hinder this and will keep the car from starting.

Oh yes, clutch pedal is down completely. With the clutch up there is no hum from fuel pump, as soon as I clutch in I can hear the hum.

Any more advice?

there should be a fuel pump shutoff switch soemwhere in the trunk. look in your manual and see what it says, most cars have that so if they get hit. it mightve got bumped and shut off or something maybe

There was another post about a car not starting under similar circumstances, but I don't know what became of that. I would definately at least call a dealership, if not have it towed to one.

Good luck.

As Hawkeye, has mentioned there was another post like this one. Do a search and I am not sure what the verdict was on that one. Good luck and post back the solution.

Tried different key, no luck...

Anyway -

Call AAA for a tow because apparantly Toyota Roadside Service doesn't recognize Scion as a toyota...wow, strange because last night it did and I got the guys to come out and try to jump start the car. This morning they had a diff story. and Toyota cust. service closed on weekends so I try dealer...They say call our own tow company and if it's under warranty I'll be re-imbursed...

So tow truck driver gets here, checks the battery and then starter, realizes there is a wire that has been cut in the starter and not crimped back properly...hmm..Twists wires together and car starts. I'm standing there like "what kind of ghetto ____ is this????"

I took it over to South Coast Toyota, and wow... First of all, I had a bad experience visiting SC Toyota when I wanted to buy a tC...The salesman (toyota guy) basically looked at me and laughed when I wanted to test drive a tC. (I was ready to buy/order). Anyway, their service dept. made up for it, big time. Ana in the service department was the most helpful person - she had her service guys look at it and apparently I-10 Toyota had installed a start kill box that hooked into my left turn signal and the starter. Great. Only problem is they

1) Blocked access to the fuses with the starter kill box
2) Totally FUBARed the wiring. They ended up leaving such little wire to the connector on the starter that the guys at SC Toyota had to fabricate a new connector.

This is totally unacceptable. The guys at I-10 tried to give me their bull____ saying that it was a security feature that they forgot to charge us for and would be glad to charge us when we go in to get the rest of my parts installed, or they can remove it. Ha. They must think I am some kind of idiot.

Anyway, they basically destroyed the wiring on the starter and I will need a new wiring harness, etc. I will find out what happens next weekend when they do my subwoofer, exhaust and gfx...Hmm I sure hope to God they don't screw up something there.

What do you guys suggest I do? Other than complain to Scion corp and Toyota corp (already in the process)... My dealer at I-10 was a great guy (his bosses and managers are the problem), and said they will do whatever it takes to keep me happy....What should I do? I could leave the remote start system on the way it is, or I can have them re-do the car's wiring...I just don't want to have to leave my car all the way in indio for a week. What should I ask them to do to make things right? I have a TRD rear sway that needs to be installed and I was thinking about asking them to do it when they do the rest of my accessories. Would that be asking too much?

Thanks

That sucks man sorry to hear that. On a positive note though, at least you know it doesn't relate to the build quality of your new car. I felt more at ease when I found that this was because of someone else's screw up.

Have them remove the "security" system and tell them you want the sways installed for free- If they group it together with the other stuff you are getting done it sounds like a very resonable request for the BS you just went through-

check the other threads about the tC security system, as I'd say it probably comes standard on everyone's tC. hey, I've got a blinking light on my dashboard even though I don't have a security system.

I would take it back and demand a new car. You do not want a car with wiring issues. They are the worst type. You don't want electrical gremlins popping up because some idiot tech wired something wrong and messed your brand new car up.

Thanks everyone.

I am going to request either
A) They replace the entire wiring harness, starter, etc
B) Replace the car.

I don't trust them to do my accessories, however I am kind of stuck because the parts are already ordered. Going to ask them to do the rear sway also.

MAKE SURE you call AND write to Scion HQ. (Snail Mail > E-mail > Phone calls) Send a copy of the letter to the GENERAL manager of the dealership. You might be surprised how people respond to letters.

Also try and get the service person to put in writing (on the work order even) that the problem was with a dealer-installed part.

Even after the problem is repaired, the letter and written evidence will give you a paper trail. You'll have proof that the dealer messed with your wiring AND did it incorrectly, and if another related problem happens later (even out of warranty) you may a case to have it fixed free (or a case to have a lawyer go after the dealer, if the worst happens).

What did you expect? Free car? They'd TP the dealer's house? They'd send Fatboy Slim to DJ in your living room?
