If you already drive faster then the speed limit, getting a radar detector will only encourage that habit.

However I am not your mother or your conscience.

First off, Radar only or both Radar and Laser?

I recommend the Valentine, it covers both radar and laser (approx 400$). However it is illegal in some states.

A more beefy radar detector is the Escort Passport 8500 x50. (Approx 300)

i got the escort 8500 x50. works great. the best part is that it detects the many many speed camaras they have recently installed all over the area. very worthwhile investment.

and having a radar detector doesn't automatically beat the cops, you have to still slow the car down to near the speed limit in a timely fashion.

Thus the reason the Valentine is illegal in some states.
Detectors are legal, jammers or fuzzers are illegal.
Stupid FCC regulations. Otherwise I'd drive around with a cellphone jammer in my car

My Valentine 1 would detect speed traps a mile away, cops around corners, and speed signs over the other sides of bridges. I f'ing SWORE by that thing before it was stolen. Valentine will also upgrade your V1 forever for free whenever new techs come out.

Not to say that the Passport sucks because it doesn't. Some of my friends in my old car club had Passports and on roadtrips to the dragstrip or gatherings to the other side of the state, they would get a lot of the same readings at the same times I did.

If you want the piece of mind that you have the absolute best, get a new V1.
If you're like many people and cannot justify dropping 400 bones on a radar detector, a used Passport off of Ebay is a lot smarter.

I thought there where no federal laws prohibiting ownership and use of jammers but I know that some states have taken upon themselves to prohibit ownership/use of one.

I was thinking about buying a Blinder laser jammer but I looked it up and the FCC has outright banned the use and ownership of one so I dunno.

Get one with "Ku" band...I got one without it and I got nailed by County doing 75 in 55 zone. The detector never went off. I received a 160.00 ticket and State of Wisconsin took 4 points off my license for the year.

Learn from me...Lying usually gives you the ticket. Being truthful usually ends up in a written warning.

To be honest; I'm surprised it took County, City, and State this long to finally get me. Since I got my car in November and my first speeding ticket was in March.

I opted to go with the Passport 8500 x50 for $300 and I am very happy with it's performance. It is a quality piece of electronics. From what I have heard, the performance of the Passport 8500 x50 and the Valentine V1 are about equal. The Valentine V1 is usually priced around $400 or more. In my opinion, the extra money buys you the indicator which shows you the direction the radar is coming from. I sometimes wish I had that feature, but I survive nicely without it.

Here is a linky to a Radartests.com review and showdown of 3 radar detectors, the Escort, Valentine, and BEL. These are the best out, I wouldn't buy a cheap radar detector because you get what you pay for.

Choose wisely

...they don't use "Ku" band in the US. the fcc has only authorized K, Ka and X bands as well as lidar. Ku is a band they use in europe.

anyway, you say it never went off and to that i ask what were the driving conditions? if you were the only car on the road at the time, the cop was probably sitting there with his radar detector off, saw you coming and zapped you and thus thusly you were done.

hands down Valentine is the best on the market. No questions asked. If you want the best, get a valentine.

I would save and spend the extra money to get the Valentine 1. I love that thing while I had it... then I had to give it back to my boyfriend. =( I miss it, especially for long drives. Unfortunately, I don't think you can get V1 in stores and it is a bit on the pricey side.. please correct me if I'm wrong about the store.

Wow, who in the world is STILL quoting Radartest.com??

For years the word has been out that the owner of that site and the creator of that test is a former Escort employee. Not a coincidence that radartest.com is the only site ever to put the Passport ahead of the V1.

I <3 my passport Just today I was driving on the parkway(sunken medow for you long islanders) and i was on the merging lane going onto another parkway (southern state for long islanders). For those who don't know what it looks like, it kinda criss crosses the highway going through some woods and stuff merging into the left side of the southern state. We'll I was flying down this merging lane doing like 65-70 and my radar detector starts beeping slowly. I figure its just a nearby store or something but then it gets stronger and stronger. So I slow down to 55 and guess whats the first thing I see getting out of the woods. A State SUV trooper staring right back at me. Escort 8500 X50 <3

The best radar detector that never fails me is the speed limit... (lol)
