WHISPERS: Toyota Planning New 250-hp Scion tC
Date Posted 08-11-2005

TOKYO — The grapevine in Japan is whispering about a hot, new 250-horsepower pure sport coupe from Toyota, coming next year, which would also double as a new Celica in Japan.

Japan's moles say they've uncovered secret plans for a new pure sport coupe from Toyota, apparently based around the Scion tC. The unnamed model, due in 2006, has 2.4-liter power, like the tC, yet is good for a reputed 250 horsepower.

Toyota is aiming at Honda's stellar Integra Type R (the more exotic, faster version of America's Acura RSX). And the idea would also be to inject some extra speed and enthusiast muscle into the tC.

America will soon bid farewell to the Celica, so this new 250-hp sport coupe would be a welcome replacement. Across in Japan, the talk is Toyota would rebadge it as the eighth-generation Celica.

While the Celica as we know it is 1.8-liter, the story goes that this new model would jump up to a special high-performance 2.0-liter motor, which may be called 2AZ-GE.

What this means to you: Biggest problem with Scion? No power. Thus, this super tC sounds super-cool; let's hope it makes it into the showrooms here.
Peace

I dowbt its the super charger, as they seem to be describing a new car altogether,

can our tC really be described as a pure sport coupe? maybe they are redesigning it?

but if it is the supercharger then, bring it on!

Very interesting...
It's pure speculation, but my thoughts are niether Toyota or Honda have never released a massed produced N/A four cylinder car with that much power. I'm thinking that it's going to be either a supercharged or turbocharged car, but you can't really tell by the article. All I can assume is that is a sports tuned version of the TC engine.

2AZ-FE (Scion TC)
2 = 2nd gen
A = engine family
Z = previosly produced
F = economy
E = electronc fuel injection

2AZ-GE (new code)
2 = 2nd gen
A = engine family
Z = previosly produced
G = performance
E = electronic fuel injection

The only difference is the G which means it will have twin cams with a narow valve angle. If it was an FI car there would be a T(turbo) or Z(supercharged) in between the G & E.

hmm, but does it make 250 hp at 8k rpm or something insane like that? seeing how it is rumoured to be 2.0 liter vs 2.4 they probably just destroked it to handle a higher redline. if so, then not really that great, whoopee kinda like celica gt vs gts. gotta drive it like you stole it otherwise not much difference in 'everyday' driving.

probably a new "reintroduced toyota supra"? Something along lines of tC with less fat? Who knows. Due in 2006? So should be on sale in 2007. Doubt 250hp. <--optioned tc with super or turbo. Deiniteately. Which reminds me. Dam it. Where are the turbos for our cars?

Kind of. Yes the stock celica had 130hp compared to 180hp in the GT-S. So that was a whole 50hp gain. Also in that case, they where 2 different engines all together. In this case, your looking at a 90hp gain, so even if you have to rev it out some, it will be a good deal faster. Just look @ the S2000, 240hp @ 7800rpm from a 2.2L engine. Its still able to have a sub 6 sec 0-60, even though it needs to be reved like mad. Now for daily driving, it does make the car seem slugesh until the VTEC kicks in. So in the case of the new car with 250hp, if it is from a 2.0L, then it will be kind of like the first gen S2000. Will rev up to about 8,800rpm or so for all its power.

What's wrong with reving up to 8k rpms. Even if you have to rev up that high for max power there should still be enough down low to make it work. Now, considering it's going to be sporting a 2.4L engine it probably won't rev that high because of the higher displacement. Who knows? It's all speculation right now.

Why do they talk about 2 motors?

I had the same problem while reading it, but that would mean that the engine would be in the S family. So the code would be closer to 4S-GE or 4SZ-GE. That is unless it uses the RAV4 2.0l engine then the A would be okay, but now were just getting to much into it.

Could it be the new Supra? I doubt it would only be 250HP though.

new Supra...
This would be like the new supra just like the RX8 was percieved to be the new RX7.

If they did make this, then the price jumps to what about 25g's atleast. I guess they will challenge the old srt4 for cheap performance car title. Although the new srt4 will be around 300hp capability seeing that they will share the same motor of the EVO X. Oh well, hopefully Toyota comes out with this supposed new tC soon.

I was thinking this same thing. Who knows though, I'd love to see what they're planning. Time will tell, and if it's the Toyota we all know and love we'll be happy I'm sure.

SRT-4 won't have the Evolution engine in it. Sorry, it's mitsubishi only there's a reason why they don't put that engine in other cars. Hell, the evo 9 isnt even out yet here.

The SRT 4 will retain it's 2.4 turbo. And will have a new body style and everything next year.

Anyways, a 250hp tc would be cool, but pricey. If it doesnt have a LSD and a 6 speed then it's not worth it in my opinion. Especially because it will have to be over 23k considering the supercharger gives 200hp an dputs the price at 20k.

I doubt anything like this will be released though. And if it is it will be the supercharger+mad mods or something. I'd rather them make it like all wheel drive or something different before they give it 250 horses. Better yet, come out with a 4th Scion model that has this power, make it smaller than the TC, 2 seats, RWD. Make it a solstice contender.
