When I first heard about the tC and saw the photos of it, I was impressed with the style of it .. It's sporty without trying to go overboard.. none of those stupid side trim pieces.. it's beautiful in it's simple lines.. Then you get the panoramic roof.. and all the standard features.. and a company that lets you customize the car from the dealer (little bit pricey, but you can finance it.. ) plus the fact that it's a Toyota product (though that was less of a factor for me)
Truly if I could have afforded it I would have bought a Cadillac SRX with panoramic roof, but unfortunately a $1000 a month car payment is a little much for me.. ;)
My other reason for purchasing a tC was because of dealer location to where I live.. the nearest Honda, Mazda, Hyundai, etc other dealers are all around 30 miles away from me.. So even if I had wanted to look at the cars from those companies, the distance would have been a nuisance I don't want..
I did do a comparison online between the tC, Mazda 3 special edition (drool), Acura RSX, Hyundai Tiburon, and a Suzuki Rio (which was just a gee whiz choice) .. considering I was going to get the tC special edition package with leather the prices weren't that far apart .. but the tC was top in about 10 different things, and the only 2.4 liter in the group.. (also as I mentioned above, Scion dealer was the only one local) ..
I decided against the tC special edition package, but I did order leather on my tC (which I'm still waiting delivery on) and with my other options I came out at $20k ..
So for me it's looks and features .. and dealer location.. and lastly.. price .. though without the price the other stuff wouldn't matter (as evidenced by not purchasing a Cadillac SRX.. )

i have been a honda guy for awhile. even when i owned my benz i was still a honda guy. but sence owning this tc i grown to like toyota. i still have love for my DA integra, but this car is more grown up: looking, faster stock, and the standard features are far better then the other cars in its class. if buying a tc get the lowering springs. i cant take the corners as fast as i would like to.
i used to drive a 1998 eclipse GST. i loved that car to death. its one of the best looking car designes every made (IMO) and it was nice and quick (mine had about 230hp with light mods). it had three fatal flaws though, and they were starting to creep up on me.
first of all the mitsubishi/dsm relyability is questionable at best. its just about 70k miles, and i didnt want to be looking for trouble any time soon.
second, it was an automatic. i got the car when i had just turned 17, and had been driving a 1988 jetta for about a year. out of the blue, one day, i asked my parents to go to a mitsubishi dealer and look around, see if they have any eclipses. since my parents were paying for it, they wanted me to have an automatic. i didnt care much at the time, as i instantly fell in love with the car. i grew to hate it though. the car felt slow and wasnt fun to drive. i yearned for a 5 speed. i actually saved up my own money and bought another supplemental car for about 2 grand (a 1990 eagle talon TSi AWD 5-speed) and loved that for about a year, till so many things were breaking on it, that it was best to just sell it. so ive been stuck with an automatic ever since.
third, is gas milage. the thing was LUCKY to get 20-22mpg if i drove super conservitively, and if i drove it like a sports car, i would see as low as 17. i averaged about 19-20mpg. on top of that, thanks to the turbo and whatnot, it required 91 octane fuel. so on top of ho-hum gas milage, i was paying 20c more a gallon at the pump than normal cars.
this brings me to a solution: a new car. ive had the eclipse for about 3 and a half years now, and these things were just getting too much. i was looking for a nice, quick, fun little sport coupe to replace it. my parents (yes, im 20 and i still live at home) gave me a limit of 20 grand. they werent going to cover all the costs, but a good chunk of it. the eclipse will cover at least 11-12 grand depending on how much i can sell it for, and the rest of the cost will be split between us. not a bad deal i think. anyway, , this took out all of the 25-30k cars i had my eye on (350z, rx8, wrx, s2000, what have you) though most of those cars got poor gas milage anyway, and still required 91 octane. im taking a hit in power by lowering the price, but i think it will suite my needs very well. the only cars other than the tC that fit the spot, looked nice, and had good relyability was an RSX and a civic Si. but the RSX starts just about 20 grand for the base model, and the type s (what i would want) at 23 grand. the civic Si isnt cheap eather, starting at 19k. plus its ugly as sin. i test drove a tC and decided that would be it. the only problem was finding one in red. i love sports cars, sport coupes, and everything in between; and every one that i own will be a bright red. i just love that color. finding one here was difficult, as they sell VERY quickly, and a lot of dealers are no help at all. i finally found a dealer that could get one, so by then, the couple weeks of searching had gone by, and i was as good as sold.
i love this car inside and out, but i do miss the power. its just not as fast. i really dont want to modify it much, as it will have an adverse effect on the gas milage. im looking at maybe some light bolt ons, an intake an exhaust at the most, but nothing more. in a few years when im out of college and working, depending on the kind of money i'm making, i'll likely put myself into a 30-40k sports car. i am more than willing to make the sacrifices for it. if i have to live in a tiny appartment (or even still at home) i'll do it, because i just
sports cars so much, and i really want something fast again without having to spend the time, effort, energy, money, and risk modifying it myself.
