Default Why does everyone Bi*ch about our trannies?

Ok...I'll be the first to say this...our cars are geared low. We are arguably the only car in production that gets worse gas mileage than the automatic. What I want to know is why our trannies are taking so much blame for our performance? Sure, we desperately need a 6th gear. But as far as the gearing ratios go, I think they're perfect (If we had that extra gear). Besides, Ive done 120+ in 5th as I assume alot of other crazy bastards like myself on this forum have as well. Do we really need a 6th? For top speed yes, for accelleration no. Personally I like to accellerate rather than try to kill myself at high speeds. And if you chill in 5th at like 60-65 (speed limit anyone?), we're only at about 2500 RPM.

When I go full throttle and change gears, when I get into the next gear I'm at 4,000 RPMs (sometimes alittle higher). I think this is perfect for accelleration being that we are always at max torque. Who else on this forum loves the ratios, or is it just me?

O yea, and to those who knock our trannies for being "potential piles of crap" the truth is that you, the driver, are a "potential pile of crap". Our drivetrain comes out of one of the most popular selling cars in america. There is ample reason for this; the Camry is one of the most reliable cars ever made. We should be proud of our drivetrain.

I could care less as long as it doesn't mess up and gets me from point A to point B and I look good doing it.

I wish we had a six speed. 80 mph = 3500 rpm already.

only gripes i have are that when i'm making a turn and i'm in first, i have to shift to second half way through the turn, or rev it up over 4500 rpm to complete the turn and then shift.

also, when i'm on the highway, i keep thinking in my head that i should be shifting to another gear, like i forgot to shift and it's still in 3rd of something.
it's awesome for acceleration, but kinda sucks for a daily driver because you have to shift so often, sucks in traffic.

This car needs a 6th gear, which makes me wonder about the bolt pattern / mounting points / linkage of the six speed thats in the celica or corola xrs.

Only thing that bugs me about the trannies is when they don't shave the mustache... I mean PLEASE, like a woman wouldn't SHAVE that!! (and for the record I'm totally F-ing with you guys. :D

I personally would like to be more than half way through an intersection before needing to shift. A lower final drive ratio would make it perfect IMO

yeah i wish we had a sixth gear. this is my first daily driver in stick and ive already tried shifting into reverse thinking there should be a sixth gear with the enging reving so high. I have driven plenty of manuals before and the final drive has been much quieter. overall im still happy and love the car. i mean jeez, i still get from 27-30 mpgs. better than my truck at 13mpgs!
