My first thought was valvetrain noise, which is not uncommon, and it sounds worse once you hear someone say theirs died on them and you start listening for it. ;) I mentioned it when it was in for the recall to cover myself and they also thought it was nothing. But they did mention that I did the right thing by bringing it up so it is noted on my ticket. That way it was first mentioned under warranty so I am covered in case it turns out to be an issue. It is a little worse when the engine is cold and has been sitting for a day, which sounds like a lifter that is draining down. But we will wait and see if it gets any worse. For now I am not worried about it. After you tear enough of them down you begin to not panic when you hear certain things. So go in and mention it and let them listen and note it. That way you are covering yourself for later if it is something.
I went and had it noted, so it's on there and i have the guys name who drove my car for 30 minutes because he heard the noise and was trying to figure out what it was, so it's all noted at toyota now, and i still have 2 years left on my warranty and im only at 10K which my car hit today =o(

I noticed this same thing on my 06 tC as well. Especially on the highway where engine noises die down and i'm at partial throttle in fifth gear.
I think it's around 80mph or so... but yeah 3000rpm is right there where I hear it. It's really high pitched, my wife never can hear it, and it only comes on at a certain rpm. It's definatly an air sound, like a high pitched whoosh, not completely unlike the sound of a spooled up turbo. My guess is that it's just simply some excess plastic/rubber flash inside the intake tubing somewhere. Either that or it's a resonate frequency for the intake plenum silencer.
Does this noise go away or not come up at all for all those out there with and CAI? Then again, maybe the extra noise allowed from the CAI may mask this noise.
It's hard to say for certain what the noise is, but I know it's not anything bad, definatly nothing to worry about.

No, I have a cai and notice it as well. It only seems to do it low end in the gear or if you step on it while cruising, but then goes away. It dosen't sound like it comes from the engine bay, it almost sounds like it's comming from underneath the shifter. At first I though it may have been an exhaust leak from where I had to cut and clamp my catback system. But after I had it welded on, the noise was still there.
I didn't take the time to read this whole thread.... but my first guess is a Metal part resonating because of the vibrating of the engine...
look at the EXHAUST HEAT SHIELD..... I know a lot of cars have a problem with the shield tapping other metal parts on the engine...

Ok well just got off the phone with the Toyota dude. He said to bring it back in because they test drove 3 tC's but he claims all have rattle/tapping noises after 3prm. He wants to look at mine again because he believes mine is louder. So there goes my saturday.
Also i complained about the rubber burning smell from the hood and through the vents, and reminded him about the high pitch noise coming from my serpantine belt area, and that his tech told me i had wear on the side of my belt and he wasnt going to do anything about it. So the guy i talked with said BRING IT IN I WILL MAKE SURE YOU ARE TAKEN CARE OF...he wasnt to happy to know his tech left my car like that i guess. So we'll see what happens.
