Default dealership call

dealership just called back telling me the car is running fine and they checked everything from the spark plugs to the exhaust and pcv case. Sounds fishy they also told me it was missing 1 quarter when i know there was more missing. Going over there later today with my Dad to complain about buying a new car that we did not know we had to put 1-2 quarts of oil in after an oil change. True bullshut gonna get the car anaylized somwhere else before they try to get me on som dealer crap.

No, that's too much oil burning.
I've never had a car burn that much.
Push them to fix it.
Its still under warranty too.
Contact Scion/Toyota too.

I don't think i've seen a car/bike without soot.
Don't worry about it unless you're burning a lot of oil.

Tail pipe should be clean - soot is unburnt fuel or oil burning. If it is coating the pipe it is polluting the air and he is burning a LOT of oil.

Every new car on the lot has soot in the pipes.
Every car/bike I've owned has soot on the pipe(s)
I don't burn oil, and I run my car to 100% temp 99% of the time.
I also use synthetic, and have never had an issue.
None of my bikes have cats.

If they do then they are running rich or the new cars on the lot are running cold and open loop because they never get warmed up enough. Bikes are another issue depending if they have cats and been modified as well as what state you are in and how strict the emissions are. I have a 1978 R100S with low mileage and can get the pipes white or light gray and that has carbs set a notch lean. If you don't hit the high speed jets the mixture stays lean - open it up and black smoke flies out. My xB tail pipe is clean enough to eat off of inside the pipe. Also new cars have not seated the rings fully yet and have a bit of breaking in to do so you can expect a little bit of oil being burned making a little extra soot.

I burn about half a quart every 5000 miles, and I'm on the rev limiter a lot due to autoxing and stuff

THAT is about normal oil use and considering the revs you are running very low use. It's all about ring spring tension against the cylinder walls and how well the oil ring scrapes the oil film off the walls. Weak spring rate and the oil film is thicker and you burn more oil. You may have less friction or you may have a less polished bore making less of a seal.

I just checked my oil yesterday while filling up the gas tank because I was curious and wanted to leave some feedback. I'm at about the 5000 mile mark using the oil Toyota puts in, and it is at the full line on the dipstick.

Wow! Maybe they tweaked a few things on the 07 motor?

It seems like the 05-06 guys are burning oil.

Not mine.
I go about 4500 miles on my oil, and it's always full when I do the changes.
Even with this past summer and 100°+ a lot, sitting in traffic, etc.

Just checked my oil; I'm at 2200 miles since last oil change.

It seems to have burned 1/4 of a quart. I topped it off with some castrol 5w 30, and it ats at full.

So for 1/4 at 2200 is about close to 1/2 a quart, possibly 3/4 for an oil change.

This appears to be normal.......I think the bottom line is if the car is within the OK range on the dipstick(in between LOW and FULL) at 5000 miles, you are okay.

I drive my car somewhat hard. Im sure some of you auto guys that dont drive hard will have less of an oil loss....

Max Oil Consumption: 1.1qt/600 miles.
Getting this info in 05 TC manual.

Seen like you're are within the range. Wouldn't worry about it too much. Just keep an eye on the dipstick every few gas up and also don't let the oil fall below the low level mark.

From the low level mark to the full mark on the dipstick is about 1.1quart, also getting this info from manual.

If you are going to keep burning the oil that fast then you may want to find out which oil burns the cleanest so you don't gum up the Cat with the burning oil. Another thing to consider is if the bottom piston rings and functioning properly or are clogged with gunk. Maybe an oil flush at the next oil change may help. Even some "teflon" oil additives may take up some of the leaking oil passages or some oil additives to reduce oil burning.

Jan06xB, you might want to keep to your xB mileage numbers, because to tell someone with a tC that they're supposed to get your mileage, you're WAY off!

Average mpg for the tC is 25 mpg. not 30. Only 2 or 3 tC's have gotten 30 around here. You're thinking too much about your xB and not our car.

There are more than a few getting in the 30's and I drove a friends Auto tC and got 36 the first time and when he did a few things that I showed him, was getting 30 pretty consistantly. But upper 20's should be doable - my point was that if you are burning that much oil and getting really low mileage like low 20's then something is not right. but if you are close to 30mpg then probably just have loose rings.

My xB mileage is in the 40's so yeah no confusion there intended. Oil use running Synlube 18,732 is down 1/8 inch on the stick since full at 14,999 so 3733 miles not much used recently and since putting Synlube in the engine I now have 15,032 miles on it having only added about 1/2 an inch on the dip stick mostly because it was not full to start.

I don't get where this "loose rings" stuff is coming from?
Why would new Toyota engines have loose rings?
I think there's a lot of "chicken little" going on in this thread - soot, loose rings?
Come on...
