Is your tC engine burning oil? Could be a big problem
#41
If you cook the rings while breaking in the engine you damage the temper in the metal making them less springy which allows more oil to get past them into the cylinders causing more oil burning. You could also have some burnt oil on the piston side walls and rings making the rings stick in the piston grooves letting more oil pass causing higher oil burn rates.

Caused by?
Going to fast?
Revving too high?
I don't believe so.
You can't drive the tC that fast.
You can only rev so high before the limiter kicks in.
I just don't think these are realistic issues on new cars.
Maybe some tCs have problems from day-one, but I'm hard pressed to buy that there's a bunch of tCs with these serious issues here.

All a matter of how you break in the engine - when they are not fully seated and the bores are not fully polished and you push it too much too soon you can cook the rings/pistons. Guys with Superchargers and Turbos do it all the time so it is just a matter of how much they can take. When the engine is new it generates a lot more heat until it is broken in and a long enough full throttle acceleration can over heat the rings - pistons cylinder walls pretty quick. Most of the time you never know what happened unless you pull the engine apart. All I KNOW is that I break in the 3 news cars and 2 new motorcycles I have owned in my life by taking it easy for the first 1000-1500 miles and they all end up not burning a lot of oil in their entire life of service. And my brother pulls apart motorcycle engines every week and sees how easily the pistons and rings can get damaged and tells me all the time that they have to be polished with lots of easy throttle and not too high revs for many miles to get them broken in properly.
The only ways to tell is to 1 pull the engine apart. 2 do an engine oil flush and see if oil use changes. 3 Compression test for blowby leakage.

im at ~4500 miles since my last oil change and I am right on the full line in my 07 running on whatever the dealer puts in.

i checked mine yesterday. a little over 5000 miles since my last change (in which i switched to synthetic), and oil was at the halfway mark (about half a quart). so i added about half a quart and is now at full.

I have an 05 tC, had it since July 2004, I'm currently S/C with about 30K miles running the S/C, I'm going through about 1-1.5 quarts of oil every 3K miles, never had this issue when I was N/A, my motor now has 130K miles, just wondering if this is normal for a S/C tC with a high mileage motor? thanks for any suggestions.

i heard it was normal with 05-06 engines cause the lack of "oil squirters" that the 07 and up have. mine does that too up to 5k miles i have to put in a quart of mobil1 and its fine

Did the dealer do a compression check? Since there's no oil port in the combustion chamber, it has to be getting in from somewhere. Two most likely suspects are from a gap between the piston ring and the cylinder wall or the valve seat isn't sealing. Compression check will rule out if there's blow-by from the piston rings. You can even do it yourself with a $20 kit from the auto parts store.

Shoot I almost get what I put in the last time when i do my oil changes at 5k. I add 4 quarts every time and get 4 quarts back give or take a tad bit. I always use mobil1, castrol full synthetic, but am gonna start using penzoil platinum next change. Ive got over 34k miles too.

My '05 is at 90K, and I haven't had any issues with noticeable low oil levels. I have all documentation of oil changes and I continue to use only 5w-30 fully synthetic(Mobil 1). I change the filter every 4K, and the oil at every 8K miles. I've learned with a few previous cars that synthetic can go a ways if you change the filter and your car is running properly.

FYI, for compression range for the tC is 145 - 189 psi. Also, there shouldn't be more than 14 psi difference between all four cylinders. If one is low, there's a bad ring. if the valve seals are leaking, compression won't catch it though, because the valve will still seal when closed, it would only leak when open. Not sure how to check that one without pulling the head, maybe shine a flashlight in the exhaust port with the header pulled and see if you can see a lot of buildup.

24k miles here and the dipstick never leaves the full mark which I'm quite happy about. I wouldn't be a happy camper if I had to add a quart or more between each oil changes.
When my pops bought his truck brand new he broke it in HARD. No oil consumption and 75k miles later. I followed the same method with my xB2 (not quite as hard but I did get on it pretty good ever since I left the lot) and I'm a firm believer in the hard break-in method.

well i really wish i would have found this thread sooner because my engine started knocking i get home and check the oil and the engine is bone dry so i fill it up and its still knocking. more then likely it was caused by what ever is causing your oil consumption. but i have the 1.8 not 2.4 and i checked the oil level 5 days before the day it started knocking and the oil was fine. kinda just popped up on me now my scion is sitting up. im almost positive its a rode knocking but it kinda sounds like detonation. ima at a stand still till i find out more so i can fix it please help

I'm assuming you have an xD? The 1.8L 2ZR is not the same as the 2.4L 2AZ. So whatever happened to your car may not necessarily be due to oil consumption. If it was burning the oil, you should have seen smoke coming from the exhaust. If you don't change the oil yourself, where ever you took it could have just not refilled it.
Try checking your coolant to see if that's where it went. If so, you probably have a blown head gasket. Either way, if it's knocking, it's probably too late already.
