Default Braking 'crunch'

Haven't had problems with everyday slowing and stopping, but if I slam on the brakes I'm met with a grinding noise coming from the front brakes, and a brief vibration emitting from the brake pedal.

Checked the brake fluid level - it's fine. Still got about 1/2" left on the pads as well.

Could it be a problem with fluid levels? I'm unsure of how to bleed the brakes.

Help is appreciated.

sounds like the abs, it scared me the first time it happened going down a snowy hill. It will grab and make a loud noise, it will also vibrate the pedal

ABS. Scary as hell the first time you hit it.
