*blinks at millertime's avatar* I've seen some provocative ones... but... I think that's pushing the envelope just a wee bit... anywho back on track...

was it snowing or something? the TC has one of the best ABS systems outside of Nissan (best in the industry) and if you were going fast enough or not having enough traction for your ABS to kick in for so long that you rolled into oncoming traffic there is a problem...

you see, ABS kicks in when your brakes go past the safe braking threshhold and your tires WILL lock up and your car WILL slide and ABS prevents that by monitoring all 4 tires and electronically pumping the brakes AS NEEDED to each tire individually over 20 times per second. My only complaint is how loud the ABS is in our cars when fully engaged. I've seen it semi-engage when I was slowing down on top of a few inches of snow, and it sort of pumped the brakes slower than normal when ABS kicks in, of course it could've just been that I was going about 10mph when it kicked in, but still, it's loud as crap when it kicks in

and think about it this way - when your ABS kicks in it means it has ALREADY prevented your tires from skidding. the key thing here is that is HAS ALREADY done it's job and is still doing it's job of not locking up your tires, and if the car didn't have ABS, your tires would have locked up and you would continue sliding forward at almost the same momentum as not using your brakes at all.

If you feel something scraping, or grinding when you brake, DON'T BRAKE THAT HARD.

If your ABS actually kicks in, that's a sign that you're hitting the brake pedal way too late.

However, if you insist on 'hard braking,' try 'punching' the brake pedal instead of mashing it to the floor. It'll save your brake pads (a little) and you won't have the ABS kick in until you absolutely need it.

Of course, you could also try focusing your attention far out through the windsheild while driving, instead of on your front bumper.

I havent had my ABS kick in and ive had my TC for 7 months. On the other hand, my 2003 Civic EX ABS seems to kick in with every moderatly hard brake.

If you ended up in the intersection with ABS, you probably would have ended up through the intersection without it.

zizi: The civic may have bad tires.

I don't understand it, if the ABS is kicking in, you shouldn't turn the wheel, instead keep pushing hard on break, and till it stop in straight line. That's what ABS intended for, you rarely see those break marks _ _ _ _ on the freeway that actually move sideways..

......

abs is intended to allow the driver to still have control over the vehicle during emergency braking, allowing the driver to steer around the obsticle instead of sliding into it...

I personally dislike abs in non winter situations as it only increases the stopping distance

true, i have noticed that once threshold braking is overridden, ABS kicks in and i stop a bit longer than i would have if threshhold would have stayed in play

I will reiterate and say that ABS is only there to ensure that you retain control of the car. It isn't there to make your car stop faster. If your wheels lock up in a car that doesn't have ABS, then you've lost control of the car and you could end up in a ditch or somewhere else. ABS is designed to prevent that from happening.

What is it with these brakes everyone is complaining about? It's one of the few things I love about this car, it seems to brake really well, I don't notice ANYTHING bad about them, and this is my first car with ABS. My mom just got a new car a few days ago, her first with ABS, and she's _____ing too.

I'll tell you something good about these brakes. Yesterday I'm going about 60 down a 55mph highway out here, an explorer to my right with the driver on his cellphone not even looking my way starts crossing. I'm guessing he thought it was a 4-way stop and he just california stopped and crossed, or he was in his own little world. I had to slam the brakes and swerve partially off road not to hit him. The guy behind me that had been riding my ___ trying to make me speed up more almost hit him too, but he had the same idea I did. The people on the other side had to move around him as well, It was like a game of frogger with an explorer instead of a frog. That could have probably been a 3 car accident or worse, and my fault for sure, with me in the hospital at the very least.

Here's a possible explanation for some of the constant brake gripes on here. With a harder suspension car (Tc isn't really that hard but anyway) sometimes as your coming to stop under relatively hard braking if you hit a sharp bump the ABS will engage and significantly increase the stopping distance, in this situation. I have one spot on the bottom of an offramp on my way to work that does this constantly, if I don't remember to plan for it. It' isn't too bad in the Tc but it was terrible when I had my RSX. Just a possible explanation for you of you.
