Default Lowering Spring Dealer Install

Ok, I am in negotiations with various dealers in the San Diego area for my tC. I was just quoted over $700 to have the TRD Lowering Springs installed by the dealer. I'm a little confused. The springs are $199 for parts. That leaves over 500 for the labor. From what I've seen, the install is a relatively simple 2-man job. I just thought I would get them covered on my warranty.

Why the jacked up price, and is there any other way to get these installed that would still be covered by the Toyota warranty? (And know, I don't know any factory-trained techs or anything).

first, 700 dollars for the installion is a rip off, you can get it cheaper if you go to a body shop...second, what warranty are you talking about?

Springs alone you can do by yourself. My cousin and I did my Shocks/struts, springs, and front/rear sway bars. took me 3 days to do, for about 3 hours a day after work. While my car was up on Jack stands i had to drive around in my dads Mitsu 3000gt. Bleh i hate that car

I realize that the install is an easy one, but if you install the springs yourself, they are not covered on your factory warranty (even if it's extended or whatnot). For all I know, they even void the warranty if something normally covered related to the springs does fail, like most aftermarket parts. If the dealer (or other authorized service-type person?) installs teh springs, they are covered as any other factory part would be in the event of a failure. Which is to say, probably not very well.

I just wondered what a normal price for this shoudl be.

Like many peeps have said here, the dealer must prove that your springs have caused damage to your car (in one way or another) in order to void your warranty. $500 huh? That's like $380 worth of beer and hookers!(Or Man-****** if you're into that kinda thing.) Call other places. I'm sure you can find somebody to do it for less then $200.

I did mine two days ago. Took me a while, but I think it was worth it. I saved at least 200 bucks. I took my time to make sure everything was done right. I had to rent spring compressors and a torque wrench, and it will also be desirable to have two jackstands and a 2.5 ton floorjack.

I would do it again if I had to. I like to get to know my car. The better I get to know her, the better we treat eachother.

I called 3 dealers in my area and got the following estimates to install TRD Lowering Springs, TRD Rear Sway Bar, and Alignment (I said I already have the parts - planning to order from Sparks or McGeorge)

Dealer 1: $800 to install springs, $88 for Rear Sway Bar and $90 for alignment
Total: $978.00

Dealer 2: $340 to install springs + sway bar, $70 for alignment
Total: $$410.00

Dealer 3: $900 for all 3 items, said it would take all day

I know that installing myself would save me money, but my main concern is time.

you could do it yourself. i did mine with no prior suspension experience. i did the entire job by myself with no help. (dont recomend) it took me a span of three days and a total of about 8 hours, it was tough getting some parts off and then fitting back on right (like the rear strut spring assembly) but heck i saved a bunch of money and had the satisfaction of saying i did it mysellf.

i've gotta pipe in here. I only paid 2 bills (bought the parts from sparks) to have my struts and shocks installed. This was installation only. get a break down on the quote and argue the fact that most of labor for the springs is nill and void if the struts are getting put on at the same time. I dealt with the same crap here in oregon between two dealerships. One goes right off the books saying "scion has their own pricing for labor and install prices", the other told me the same thing, but they were realistic about the double labor charges and negotiated with me. it took some time and I had to drive a little farther, but half the price was half the price...
