Default Needs Brakes

I went and got my wheels weighed and balanced, and the tech came out and said I needed new brakes too... I'm only at 12K miles. Does this sound right? I just laughed and said alright, took the car keys and left because i figured he was tryin to get me to get something I didn't need. But is it possible I need new brakes already? I'm not especially hard on the brakes or anything. They don't squeak yet. I'll check em out next time I got my wheels off.

You'll have to check them out for yourself to be sure... but I'm over 60k on OEM brakes and I autox regularly. I'm just now starting the process of replacing them.

Could be premature wear or them being salesmen... or a combination. Just have to take a look first.

yea.. surprisingly i'm pretty much around 60K myself and the original OEM brake pads that the car came with are still in good condition.

the only way you can really make sure is to check them yourself.

I've got 50k miles and still with OEM rotors and changed pads once - check yourself to make sure - everyone is trying to make an extra buck nowadays with how the economy is going

stoptech stage II by the end of year for me (hopefully!)

Hit up the freeway and cruise around the speed limit, take your hands off the wheel, and slowly apply pressure to the brake pedal. Does the steering wheel shake and or vibrate excessively?
(dont crash your car. Hold you hand close by just in case something happens.)

If so, you might have warped rotors. But, for that to happen at 12k would be hard to do with your driving habits. I'm sure the sales guy was trying to sell you on something that you dont need.
