Default Rims...or springs? What would you do first?

Seriously. If you only have the choice of one or the other, which would you do?

I have a RS1.0 that come with the 18inch Enkei's...but I'm not so crazy about them because every Joe Dirt that buys a rim package upgrade from Toyota gets the same exact rims. So a part of me really wants to get something 'different'.

On top of that, now I see 2 other RS1.0s around town regularly (darn, I don't feel so "special" anymore! )

I can only really afford one or the other...so:

Same rims that everyone else has, but without wheel gap?

Or "different" rims with wheel gap?

You can only afford one or the other??

$160 springs or $1000+ rims??

If you can afford rims, just save a little more and get springs too

If you had to do one, I'd do springs first. I think drop and no rims looks better than rims and no drop. Plus, after you're lowered you can get a better idea of the wheel fitment.

$160 springs or $1000+ rims??
Ah yes...

I wouldn't do the spring myself, and the best I can find in Orlando is a shop that said they would charge around 3 or 4 hours of labor (which is better than the dealership's quote of 5 to 7 hours...those bastards).

So REALLY, you're talking $160 - $200 for the springs plus another $300 - $500 for labor. Taxes, etc etc...now we're talking $500 - $700.

Also, I'd be buying and installing the springs in cash.

Rims, on the other hand, I can buy on credit, which won't be a $500 - $700 hit at once like the springs would be.

But I think I'm leaning towards the springs. I was just wondering what other people would prefer too.

I would do the wheels/tires first. Then you can get an idea on how much you want to drop your car afterwards after seeing how the wheels/tires fit and look on your ride.

lol.

I should know by now that when you ask a question like this, you're going to get "YES!" to both sides.

Maybe I'll just bite down and hold out until I can afford to do everything at once. I guess I can live with my 18ince Enkei's and wheel gaps for several more months.

That doesn't make sense. There are greater variables when it comes to wheels and tires whereas the (relatively few choices of) spring height is the constant.

That's why I was considering doing one at a time...with the thought that I'd stick w/ the same tires on same size wheels, and in theory the springs would still be at the right height.

Ah, I see, then it should work out either way! But, like Brad said, do it all at once - if you have the patience

Oh, and search SL around, you might find spring installs cheaper

Would you be able to do both if you sold your Enkei's? It's a tough choice. Springs are not that difficult to install, you should consider doing them yourself. Plus like squirrel said, you won't have to pay for the alignment twice.

A part of me really wants to try to do it myself, I've researched all over the place on how to do it...but I don't have the tools or the place to do it.

The most I've ever done is simple maintenance...like changing brake pads and oil. So I'm not really confident about doing a project this big (which, I know is not really that *BIG* as testified by all the experienced tuners out there...but you know, I'm a noob).

Yeah your pretty much "stock" in a sense since everybody with that car pretty much has those. Why don't you get some new 18s and then buy some springs with the money that you can sell those Enkei's for? And $300 for spring install!? I paid $85.....

Tell you what, I'll trade you my stock 17s and TRD for your Enkies, then you get both, and I'll just get new springs!

Seriously, drop that ish. Those rims are tight. Even the stock 17s are decent, but that wheel gap is HORRIBLE!

Lots of good advice, thanks everyone.

I've decided to work on lowering the car, either with springs or coilovers.
