TRD springs and rubbing!! WTF? updated w/pics
Ok no I have had nothing but problems with my TRD springs. I am on my third pair, all replaced by the dealership for malfunctioning. Anyway recently I just put my new wheels on and I am rubbing!
The wheels are 18x8 +38 and I am using 225/40/18 tires. If I put anyone is the car other then myself (front or back) this causes the rear to sit low enough that I rub over any dip in the road. Not bumps but you know the dips. I have not noticed anyone else having this issue and this is on the red TRD springs. Does this mean that I need new ones again?! or are the shock/struts done.
Car only has 14,500 miles and I am not an aggressive driver.
Any thought would be appreciated.

What exactly is rubbing? Is it on the fender? Or the wheel well liners? Something else around that area maybe?
I wouldn't imagine you'd have problems unless by some chance your struts blew. Do you get a lot of bounce?

The inside part the of the rear fender is hitting the outside top of the tread on the tire. As for the bouncing, it seems normal not excessive, so this might rule out the strut problem
also please move to suspension and handling, posted in wheel and tire. opps

Do you have mudguards? I actually "bottomed out" twice yesterday - with stock springs. I think that I actually just hit the mudguards on the ground rather than actually bottoming out, but regardless, it really sucked
Anyway, the obvious question here is - how fast you are going through dips/bumps? The tC is no buick, and you can't just drive over bumps at full speed and expect everything to be ok. Even with my stock setup, I still have to go slow enough to where I need to clutch in in first (so maybe 2-3 mph) to prevent the back of the car from literally jumping off the ground and slamming back down.

Wow u definitely shouldn't be rubbing. One of the guys in my car club has 18x8.5" wheels on Tein S-techs (2.5"front 2" rear drop) and he never rubs at all unless he just hits a big dip that he didn't see. I myself just got lowered last wednesday and I have Zenn Suspension springs which are 2" front and 1.75" rear and I have stock size wheels and tires but I don't have any problems at all.
I also think that the Zenn Suspension springs ride better than the s-techs but that may be because they haven't settled yet.

1. on the highway going about 75 or so and if the road takes a dip I will rub.
2. on the local roads (now I am in Boston..damn roads) if I am going around 45 there are
a couple of areas that this happens.
I just don't think that this should be happening at all! not on TRD drop of only 1.25. IT seams to be hitting the little metal lip (bottom of the fender).
i just got lowered myself,
19x8.5
225/30/19
S-Techs
my fronts rub the inner fender on dips, i have yet to bottom out or rub at all in the rear after about 150miles,
i also have a solid 200 lbs of stereo in the back weighting it down, so it sits a bit lower, my rear wheels are tucked and they dont rub or bottom out...

I don't see how u should be rubbing at all. Like i said one of the guys in my car club has the same size wheels and tires and has a lot lower drop and he doesn't rub like that.
Is that the RS1 lip kit? Sorry to get off topic. If it is I was wondering if u could pm me how much it cost to get painted and how easy the install was? I am also wondering if u had any problems putting it on.

even though your wheels stick out more than the stockies, I still don't see how you are rubbing like you are... here is mine...

even with two people in the backseat I still don't have ANY rubbing issues...

are you sure it is not your struts? I noticed that my rear camber seems to be more than yours, ever got an alignment after you got the springs? I aligned mine and I know both rears are at -1.0 degree (middle of spec is -.9 I believe) so I know my setup is good... hmm still believe it is probably the shocks... interesting to see the culprit... oh and sorry bad quality pictures I know but my digi is out of batteries so I had to use the phone...

So went to the Toyota dealership yesterday. And the answer I got, is was I expected. "the springs are functioning correctly and are in spec." "Due to the oversized wheels this is causing the issue and no replacement is necessary."
So this leaves me w/ two options
1. Buy a new set of springs. possibly H-tech or basic H&R. Both are lower in the rear then the TRD's but the compression rate is stiffer and might fix the problem
or
2. Rent a fender roller and a heat gun and go at the rear of the car. Really don't want to attempt this but I looks like I have no choice
Any other suggestions or input on which direction to go?
