Default 17's vs 18's

Well...here I am about to pick up some new 5zigen FN0R1-C or w/e the damn name is heh...

EIther way. I only have 10k miles on my stock tires. If I go for 17's I can toss my stocks on them and be done with it and it will still look sweet.

However, I kinda want 18's but from what some of the socal guys tell me is that the 18's w/ low-pro will wear a lot faster (around 10k miles) and you need to replace them. This would not be an issue if the tires did not cost 500 for the set every 10k miles...

I drive a lot too for school and what not and I already have the 10k on the car in under a year.

I also hear that the 17's are smoother and have a little better handling than the 18's? I am not sure on this one though~

I have TRD lowering springs if that helps with anyones idea of what I am getting at as far as price/performance

Any suggestions? THanks guys

Go with 18's. I have 17's and regret it so much now. :/

well lets start with the basics. The 18s have an inch wider in diameter. So they should be heavier, and tires should be more expensive. You cant use your stock tires on the 18s.

Ride quality depends on the rims and tire combo. Cheap tires is usually a cheap ride. Some tires wear faster than others too. I would go with tires that last a long time. Oh and the 17s tires and 18s tires should wear at the same rate. Those socal guys were saying that the stock tires would last longer than low profile racing tires...

Performance depends a lot on tires. Good performing tires wear really fast, which is why I would get tires that last a long time, and if you want to test out the performance get a set of slicks and two cheaper light rims for the track.

I think 18s look better than 17s, heck you might even wanna go with 19s..

The decision is up to you, but thats about the only differences...

Price for 17's and using stock tires = 550 for the wheels

Price for 18's w/ new tires = 1100...

Think it is worth it? For a .5" difference?

And thank you for the replys about the tires and performance etc

no. go for the 17s. +1 is the absolute largest i would go with on a tc. anything larger looks "ghetto/ricer". imo.

the lightweight wheels will improve your handling and ride quality, but the stock rubber will still be a limiting factor in terms of traction and grip/ cornering and acceleration.

i got a new set of 17s with nice BFG rubber for the spring/summer. keeping the stockers in storage as spares or for winter/beater wheels.

its always nice to have 4 extra wheels sitting in your garage.

17's... why

- u will be faster
- u will have less rotating mass and your speedo will be a tad more accuaret
- u will waste less money on tires and rims
- u will have better handling
- ur wheels on average will be lighter
- save tranny and engine life
- u wont feel every bump on the road and will have a smoother ride.

Get the 18's with new tires and have an extra set of wheels/tires hangin around. IMO 18's with 225/40's are the perfect fit with TRD components. Buying another set of 17's seems like a waste.

i would go for the 18's. obviously, they will cost more than 18's both wheels and tires. i'd say the 18's would give the tC a fuller look because the body lines of the tC sort of make it look bulky (not in a negative connotationt) so having 18's would probably match up with the tC's bulky look. i've only seen 18's on a tC, i haven't ridden in one yet; so i wouldn't be able give an opinion performance-wise. i'd have to say its all up to personal preferences. when it comes downs too looks, the owner should decide what goes on it because its their car and its up to them to cosmetically upgrade it according to the way they want it. its up to you to decide.

Anything over 17" is a vanity affair.

Do you care about looks?

I do not care about looks as much as I care about performance.

I think that the 17's and 18's both look good...A friend of mine has 17's that I thought were 18's right off the bat when I saw his car and they look clean...

I also do not have to spend the money on the extra tires right now and I can spend it on other body mods like the kaminari kit I want...

However...I do not want to regret my purchase later on....but then I again I can always sell them yeah?

Heh...I think I am going to go with the 17's for price to performance to value

Appreciate the replys guys

I went with 17s on mine, Falken C-Specs. With the TRD springs and no body kit, they really fill the wheel well pretty well. I got a new set of tires with the rims, but i kept the old set so I can have them put on when these wear out. I priced the 18" tires, and they are over $150 each. Plus with the 25k miles a year I drive it just wasnt worth paying every year for new ones. The 17s look good enough, are more comfortable on bumps, and cost less!!

HAHA I changed my mind. I called up the place I am buying them from and they quoted me 1100 for

5zigen Hyperblack 18" FN01R-Cx4
Faulken GX 225/40/18x4

I think it is a steal...mounted and balanced...Yay...the tires should last me about a year and a half which is perfectly fine for me...

330 for wheels every year and a half is perfect

check the socal craigslist and recycler to find 225/40/18 Falkens for $390 mounted and balanced. thats what i pay for mine. if youre willing to settle for made-in-china/taiwan tires, you find a set of WanLi or Ling Long (lol, its a real tire) for $320 or less mounted and balanced.
