these questions come up all the time. The width of the wheel is important, but if you are trying to find out if you are going to rub the offset is what will determine that. If you are going to run an 18 x 8 +38 for example that will fit fine on even s-tech. Where as an
18 x 8 +45 will fit but might rub at times. Where as an 18 x 8 +32 would be the same as stock.
Hope this helps

It's all about the offset, but are you sure about that JQ? I thought a higher offset allowed more room for a wider tire. My lack of knowledge is making me nevous about buying new wheels...

A higher offset (something like 45mm with an 8" rim) will give more clearance to the fender. However, having a larger offset you also have to think about the inside of the wheel well (to struts/spring) because you don't want the tire rubbing on thoes either.

I must have been confused with what I'd read....I thought you wanted to stay close to a stock offset? I was looking at an 18x8 with a 35mm offset. I was going to wrap it in 225/40/18 tires, but I scrapped the idea because I thought it would rub the fender from jutting out another inch on the wheel alone, not counting the sidewall of the tire....does this mean I can still get this setup?

Here is a good tool to help determine the inner and out changes.
http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp
just enter the stock wheel (17 x 7 +45) and then what the rim you are intersted in and hit "calculate"
And you are right I just worded the above post backwards.... sorry.
+45 13mm less inner, +38 6mm less, and +32 same inner.

yes you should be able to get an 18 x 8 +35. This would result in the inner clearence being 3 mm less and the outer being 23mm extended which is roughly .90 of an inch. Now this should fit on most spring setups....what are you running?

Yes
8mm less inner clearance and extended an extra 18mm. This will fit no problem with 225/44 tires
