help me decide on tires please? prob buy tomorrow
Hey guys,
So I'm sure there are extensive reviews on each tire available here, and I've been searching through a few and it's been very helpful. But I was hoping I could get input from all of you. I'm currently on the donut, so I should probably replace the tire soon. Just about to reach 45k, still on the original potenzas. It's an '05 tC, stock 17 inch rims. I'm not looking to replace the rims, and as far as what I need from the tire it's gotta be all season, but I want max performance (handling, grip, smoothness). Oh yea and budget... Ideally 135 each or less. I'm more or less a casual driver, I do like to push it every now and then but just high speed highway stuff, no dragging. Just getting the front 2 replaced. I know 45k is a lot of mileage but the tread isn't too bad on them. One tire got punctured / sliced so I figure might as well replace two since they do kind of suck in the rain. Thanks guys.

wow.. i'm surprised that you even got 45k out of those pos-tenzas.. lol... I would buy all four... you won't regret it... I bought some kumhos ecstas... i bought them for 60 a piece from tirerack awhile back.. and got them installed for about 70... can't beat that price.. and i love themm they are really sticky.. and ride great from the price i paid...
everyone here is going to shout the Toyo's until the end of the earth, i don't know what the trip everyone is on here about those tires, probably because they're cheap and not many people have experience driving on dozens of sets of tires. I've driven my buddy's TC with them and I really don't like them for what I would use them for,
first of all, the treadlife on them isn't that great, we rotated the tires on his car and he put 7k on them and there is a noticeable difference in wear between the fronts and the rears, I wouldn't even think to believe they'll last more than 20k
the sidewalls are too soft, it feels like the tires are folding onto themselves under heavy cornering, and they are not very predictable at the limit
They heat up fast and overheat easily at the track, this is coming from my infared temp gun and the fact that the times in his car were slipping after each run he did at autocross, and he's a consecutive driver
---personally, all of the flaws listed above are naturally occurring flaws of all-season tires, and it's the exact reason I will never run all-seasons on any car I own, period.
Tires are meant to be driven in a certain temperature range under certain conditions, and trying to make a tire that performs in 150+F asphalt and still bites snow in sub-freezing temperatures is a never-ending battle that always ends with COMPROMISES
I don't compromise when it comes to traction.
I'd go with Falken Azenis 615's, Hankook Ventus RS-2's, Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's, or BFG Gforce KDW's, in that order, and when winter comes around, buy yourself some winter tires on steelies if you have to. That's why they're called Summer and Winter tires, so you can use them during the different seasons, where they belong. if you HAVE to get all-seasons, I'd go with either "Yokohama ADVAN S4"or "Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position" - not ALL potenza's are bad, just OEM ones.
don't compromise on something as critical as traction.

Otocan, with all due respect, and I do appreciate your input, I think my uses wouldn't justify the expenses. I completely agree with your points, however I honestly don't have a place to keep extra tires. Perhaps down the road I will go with seasonal sets. I think for my purposes the toyo's would do fine. However it seems they are rated quite poor in the snow, which worries me as I'm in the northeast. Anyone have any experience with the proxes in the snow? I'm sure it's nothing special, just wondering if it's any worse than the OEM potenzas.

snow tires have knobby, blocky tread with good sipes running the length of the tire and not much overall flat surface area
summer tires have a higher surface area usually with longitudinal "V" shaped tread for better water dissipation and less/smaller sipes because it lowers overall contact patch.
Here's the Proxes4

Here's the Yokohama Advan S4

Here's the Bridgestone RE960AS

Here's a pair of winter Blizzaks

AND here's Falken Azenis RT-615's

obviously different tires, for three different things. You can see how much surface area the Proxes has compared to the other all-seasons, and how it has more of a likeness to a summer tire than tread-blocks for winter
If I were to buy ONE tire that I know I would have to use in OUR Northeastern winters and still wonder how I'm getting to work in the morning, it would be the Advan S4's because of their large sipes and "V" cut blocks to help cut into snow. They are rated #1 all-seasons on tirerack as well.
you should just order them online.. you'll find them cheaper and install should be just about the same.. only difference.. is that most tire installers won't honor warranty issues if you don't buy the tires from them... even tho they are suppose to...
Here I come to confuse you again . The Advans will do little good where you live . In summer , they will be great . Just the cold temps up there will make them a poor choice . The Kumho tires are a better choice although , could still be a slight problem . For where you live , the ASX is a good choice . The Adavan S4 , as good as it is , will not do you well at all there .
The reservation I have with the toyos is that all of you who are pushing it as an All season tire live in warm areas! Ya'll prob have never seen snow. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to get another set of winter tires anytime soon so I need something that's not going to get me killed in the snow.
