Default McGard locks broke, wtf?

So I was cleaning my CAI filter the other day and try to take my wheel off to get at the piping easier. I, for some crazy reason, am unable to untorque the lugs. They won't budge an inch. I'm no weakling, I've taken my wheel off before with no problems at all. I have a feeling the dealership overtightened them last time I went. So I'm struggling with these lugs and have the key for my McGard lugs on. I turn with all my might and the f@cking thing cracks. The bloody lugnut cracked. How the hell does a solid piece of metal crack off?! I also split open 3 knuckles on my left hand and scratched my rim in the process. I'm so ____ed. Now I have to figure out where to get this damned thing removed and contact McCrap now and find out if they warranty replacements. Considering this quality I'm wondering if I should even bother with them anymore. I was wondering if anyone had any problems with stripping the gorilla locks or lugs or any cracking of either? I plan on getting new rims and tires soon and I'll be damned if I'm gonna f@ck them up cuz of ____ty lugnuts.

I'll try to get photos today after I get out of work and post them up here.

I cracked my McGard Lock Key. I'm a small guy so there's no way I could have over torqued the lug nuts.

dealership over tightened my wheel locks and one of them cracked and my key would no longer fit over it. i was ____ed, but the dealership has a "master set" or key or whatever for getting wheel locks off because every time somebody trades in a car they forget to give the wheel lock key with it.

so call your local dealership and see if they can get it off for you.

I see it all the time at my job... Other shops dont use a yellow, green, or red torque stick, all they do is gun them on.....The cheapest air gun has about 150lbs of torque, which is more than enough to tighten a toyota wheel,(which only asks for like green 75)...most likely if your lock broke and they cant get it off, then they'll have to break your lug nut off....Which all they do is hammer a smaller socket on to it and hope it comes off.....Good luck and hope that they didnt strip the tread and you stud breaks.....anyway sorry for the long post,. just make sure next time they use a torque stick so you dont go through this again...

You dont have to be that strong to over torque. If you have a 1 foot lug wrench and you lean on it you will over torque unless you weigh 76 lbs

I broke a lock and key at the same time due to TiresPlus over-tightening my lugs. Took 180 lbs of torque to remove them at least (wrench handle about 1 foot long, me at 170lbs bouncing ot it to remove). The tire shop ended up buying me a new set and working 2 hours to remove the ones that would not budge. I double checked them with my torque wrench in thier parking lot when I got it back Needless to say, for tire mounting I will remove the wheels and drive them up there next time.

Didn't have time to get photos uploaded last night, I'll try to remember when I get home this afternoon. Has anyone had any problems with the gorilla lock lugnuts having similar problems? I plan on heading to the dealership this week to see if they can remove it for me. The chunk that cracked off is along the threading so the key won't support more than about 5 lbs of pressure before it slips right off the lugnut.

ive seen this before with other brands, aswell as mcgard.. doesnt mean the lug nuts are crap. alot of people make the mistake of using a air gun to put them on.. and sometimes they go on sideways which pretty much cuts new threads in them.. so the only way its gonna come off is in pieces.. this happened to my friends focus, and it took a chunk of the wheel stud with it.. which means he had to get a new stud repressed..

any aftermarket lug nut will strip/break if they are over torqued. only remedy is to use caution when puttin them on and off. i have muteki's....but mcgards look/seem to be made a lil stronger than mine. mcgards are used in many OEM applications.

cut your fingernails.

however i have heard of mcguards breaking before, also never trust a dealership to do ANYTHING.. they must have used an impact gun to put the lugs back on.

That is the strongest way to make a wheel lock. It also looks like it broke at the weakest points. All steels will break at some point. I've seen a 2500 LB chunk of forged steel crack in half. It can happen if the force applied passes the design limits, such as over torquing.

Haha, I actually trimmed them before taking that photo. I file my nails to points. I can't do anything with short nails.

Hey, these look like the same one's they use on Lexus. If I can help let me know. Those locks should still be covered under warranty though.
