I got a gash on the sidewall and need to replace ONE tire.

Everywhere I go (Discount/NTB) is trying to say that I would need to replace all the tires beause the treds would be different otherwise...

I don't know about replacing ALL of the tires. But you could get away with replacing two and it would be just fine. He's kind of right about the tread being different, but not for all 4. You'd want to replace either both front or both rear.

 

get 2 new ones and put them in front. Always keep the good ones in front since its a front wheel drive. Could you post how much they are since I'll be lookin for new tires really soon too.

 

Keep the good ones in the back. Not front.

 

If you have the Potenzas and you want to replace those, you're looking at $160+ per tire. Search around Wheel & Tire forum and you'll see a lot of other recommendations that are MUCH cheaper.

 

Why would that be? I'm no expert but common sense tells me you want the most traction where your powers coming from. Anyone else wanna weigh in

 

i use to work at a tire place and you put the good one on the back they say.. i think it was because most of the weight is on the front so less traction is needed... or something like that.. you need to keep from fishtailing... I couldn't tell you 100% but that is what the big corp told me..
just replace 2.. you will be the best judge of that... how many miles... were they driven hard... they are z rated tires so they should last about 20-30k miles if well taken care of. in the gash.. do you see the wires.. if not i wouldn't replace it.. if you do.. then replace it... if all 4 are down to the traction bar.. then replace all four...

if they said you need all new tires, they either dont have the tire you need or your tread is worn PRETTY bad

^^^ you want to keep all four good.. if the front blow out then you're screwed.. but for the most part. if the back don't get traction then you fishtail...

 

i kno u want all 4 to be good, you wont fishtail all the time...only under certain conditions, does not happen to any customers cars ive put good tires up front on

i will however pass that on to the techs..see if they change their ways

 

It depends on the tread depth of the other 3 tires. If the other 3 tires are in pretty good shape, then you should be fine. If they are worn down too much, then you would need to replace all 4. Do you know what the tread depths are of the other 3 tires??

I know u wanna keep all of em kinda close. But I'm still leanin towards puttin my good tires on the front. U sound like u have more experience then me though so I'm not tryin 2 start a war here but lets look at this scenario.....If u have a pair of bald tires and a set of new tires, which would u put up front where the power is? Ok so if u put the new 1's on front in that scenario then why not every scenario. The front 1's r the ones to hit water first (would'nt u wanna steer somewhat while hydroplanning treads=better steering and traction) I still wanna here from some more folks on this topic

 

elemeno I think you are on the right track, if the front tires are the ones hydroplanning and slidding, you cant steer out of it. if the backs are skidding atleast you have a chance to save it.
This is one of my first front wheel drive cars in years, but tell me the last time anyone was driving a front wheel drive car and skidded during normal driving? It doesnt happen OFTEN. SO i think the good tires should go where the steering and power is.

 

I can understand where ya'll are coming from... I'm not saying if the tires are bald then put the new ones on the back.. I'm saying if the tread is low, BUT not to the tread bar then put the new ones on the back. Reason being is because the front has more weight so less tread is needed to make better traction unlike the back where there is less weight so more tread is needed to make traction.
Plus, most drivers, whether the front hydroplan or the rear hydroplan, they will not be able to control their car.
and technically, if the fronts are hydroplanning then you do have a chance to steer out of it because you can change direction and speed, unlike the back where you can't.

 

I guess we'll all have 2 agree 2 disagree But I think we all agree that all your tires should be prettty close to the same tread depth. I think we went off the intended topic here which was pretty much my bad.
