Default Staggered setup WHY?!

I am curious to why I am seeing some rides here with staggered setup being that it is a front wheel drive, for some reason I could see some really bad handling here.. Clue me in...

It's because they CAN if they want to. Doesn't matter what others think. If you like the staggered setup, then go with it. It's all a matter of opinion.

what hasnt been said already? :] it's just nonsense.

95% of people who buy anything sporty don't buy it to drive sporty. it's like a manly fashion show.

I don't think anyone with a staggered setup ever claimed it was for go. Obviously its for show and it looks good. If you don't plan on racing all the time, I say go for it. Why the hell not?

I think it's important to differentiate between an 18" staggered setup with reasonable wheel width and the 19 and 20" ones that have ridiculously wide wheels for a FWD.

For the more reasonably-staggered wheels, it's for looks and it really doesn't have much effect in street driving. Not everyone races and goes as quickly as possible everywhere, so it's not a big deal.

The huge wheels, though, I will agree are all for show. They're so heavy and out of place it's impossible to justify them otherwise.

1) forget rotating tires
2) it's expensive
3) the car will probably go slower and handle much worse

that's all :] there is no positive except the "show" factor.

I think the people that have a staggered setup are well aware of the drawbacks.
1)who cares?
2)obviously they can afford it
3)you will not be able to tell a difference unless comparing 1/4 mile times

apparently I care, so I haven't done it. I never said you shouldn't do it. I'm just saying it's for looks. and you're agreeing with me. :]

to answer your question:

BECAUSE THEY CAN

i personally wouldnt do it on my car, but if people want to do it then more power to them, i will admit i like looking at show cars, but i would never want my car to be a show car.

Here is a linky for a more technical discussion.

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...024&highlight=

Now, a lot of people just jump on the "There is no use!!!1!11" bandwagon whenever these threads show up. Please, please, please, either have a technical and logical reasoning behind your assumptions covering all points and (which I assume you would have with this) experience running a staggered set-up. It is easy for everyone to say they do not do anything when no one has tried running a staggered set-up at the track.

As for the link, a brief summary. Running staggered widths is not necessarily bad. It will not harm the car. They WILL cause more understeer on a stock FWD car since the rears are now even more planted. HOWEVER, running front and rear swaybars, particularly on a race setting, will induce oversteer on our cars and thus, wider rear wheels will combat this and give better handling. BUT, because of the grip, the car, at its limit, will exhibit snap oversteer. This is not "bad" but for someone who was not expecting it, it could be a disaster.

In the end, staggered wheels do have a handling benefit, however, one must learn the new handling characteristics before pushing the car the the extremes right away in a place where you have to room to recover.

Since most people do not track their car, it is easier to say there is no benefit except looks, which would be true. It is also better to tell people not to since they will not expect or even care that the handling characteristics will change, which will prevent an accident. (The latter is for people who will not take the time to learn the specifics)

my reason..

it looks good.

aww cmon.. doesnt it?

i dont race, i hardly drive fast. i dont autox. i cant tell ANY difference between my wheels now and the stock 17s.. but i love the stance my staggered wheels create on the tC. the whole fwd/rwd convo never even comes up with 98% of the ppl out there.. my ONLY reason for having a staggered setup is because it looks good.

thats it.
