Default torqing new studs down while in gear, but spinning!

ok so im installing extended wheel studs on the fronts and when i torque down the nut to get the new stud to seat properly the hub/rotating assembly turns when i put too much torque on the nut, now i have the car in 1st gear while doing this to prevent the hub from spinning while torqing the nut. my question is it supposed to spin after so much torque is applied? and if so does it cause any damage to the tranny or anything? kind of concerned about that, and no i couldnt get enuf torque to seat the studs fully i also tried putting it in reverse, and same thing, will let me tighten to a certain extent then starts to spin.

What I did was grab my 50 pound dumbbell and put it on the brake.

haha cool, well i had to take the brake rotors and calipers off to install the new wheel studs so standing on the break wont do much lol. i guess ill tighten the studs as much as i can b4 the hub starts to spin then slap on the breaks use a 50 lb dumbbell to press em and torque the lugs some more! thanks fellas

you should get a 1/2 torque wrench with socket so you can properly torque down your lug nuts. if the wheels are off the ground you need a way to stop it like friend on the brakes. if it's in the front, have the other side touching the ground so the diff won't spin. if it's in the rear, pull the ebrake.
