Default URGENT: Broken Wheel Lock KEY!

Does anyone know how to remove a broken wheel lock?

We're swapping back my 18's and while taking off my stock 17's,
the KEY for the lock cracked and broke.

I need to take off my rims!

I already have 2 18's on one side but the other side still has
the stock 17's.

PLEASE someone help me out![/quote]

Use a gator wrench. . . don't ask how I know or how I found out. . . but only works for certain types of lugs locks. . .

It's that universal socket head type thing that fits over anything. You might have seen one on TV.

so you bought a whole new set from the dealer?

How are you guys breaking the wheel locks and/or the keys? Are you overtorquing? 76lbs guys, not as tight as possible

i cracked my key, wasnt fun, decided to try and take off the rest of them my self, what i did was use a dremel and make indents on the lock, like a 12 point socket would look like, i took a 21mm 12point socket and hammered it onto the lock once i make all 12 points and then used a ratchet to take them off, was a lot of work i would recommend you just go to the dealer and see what they say first

That's one reason I always buy a spare lug lock key... (The other is at one time I misplaced my key and didn't have a spare...)

yeah i would recommend everyone buying a spare key, but the problem this time is that his wheel lock broke, what happened is you applied to much force on one side of the lock therefore it snaps

shattered a key and a lock at the same time. That is because the moron at the tire shop torqued my wheels to around 170 ft lbs.

The registration car that came with them will have the replacement numbers for your specific set. I think the key is around $12 and the locks are about $10 each if you buy them separately. The dealer or a good tire shop can take them off. It isnt that hard to do, but if they slip and scratch up your rims.. THEY get to pay for them

The shop I use always uses a torque wrench when tightening ANY lug nut - it's policy there, and any tech who doesn't do that doesn't work there long.

Yeah, it takes them maybe 30 seconds longer per tire, but they take pride in doing their job right.

They have a lot of extremely loyal customers, and they are the ONLY people who will work on my wheels/tires unless it is an emergency. I trust 'em.

Yeah, I asked this shop that (always do) and they swore that is thier policy. After I tried doing a brake job a couple weeks later and found out how tight they were (and breaking the lock and key trying to get them off) they still said "we use a tq wrench or tq sticks.. it is our policy". Then once I got there and they looked at it, they had nothing else to say but "We will order a new set and fix it for you" Of course, I should have seen the red flag when it took thier guy 3 hours to change 4 tires! But, at least I know where not to go next time :D
